Ok guys, I have an Xbox with the Falcon chipset in it and a BenQ drive. The system gave me the E74 and shortly thereafter gave me RROD. I fixed it and have the drive flashed and all.
The fix worked for about 3-4 months, then RROD again. I fix it, it works for a while, then RROD again. It has gotten more and more frequent and is now about every week.
I was wondering if I bought a new one with the Jasper Chipset, has anyone had any problems as of yet out of those? And all I would need to do is pull the key off of the Lite-On and spoof the BenQ. Since the system keeps RROD I don't really need the drive for anything else, and I'd rather put the wear and tear on my old BenQ so I have the Lite-on if it ever goes out.
I've read some about the Lite-ons just wanting to make sure thats all I have to do with it. I know I need the probe and all, I'm gonna make one of those in the next few days.
And for flashing the Lite-on's, when I need to power cycle the drive when erasing, can I hit the power button on the xbox or does it have to stay half ejected at that time?
And I know there are tuts but I searched and no definitive answer for my question, so I thought it best to ask before proceeding.

I haven't seen any reported problems dealing with the Jasper chipsets and RRoD. But that doesn't mean it can't happen. The smaller chip size helps with less heat and power consumption but I wouldn't be shocked if RRoD happened to Jaspers' down the road.
Since you are going to be making your own extractor, go ahead and flash the LiteON with ix1.51 or 1.6 (since ix1.6 is coming out really soon). Copy the games you really play to the hard drive and you won't ever have a problem with the drive going out.
As for flashing the LiteON, if you are using a compatible chipset, you won't have to worry about much. Only thing you really have to worry about is when you are using a VIA 6421 chipset. The viamraid.sys or vsmraid.sys driver from C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers causing problems with the freeze; so just make sure you have that removed when you go to flash.
You can use the Jungle Flasher tutorial linked in my signature.

Yeah, I know my computer has a Via chipset, just not sure which as it is an onboard chipset. I will uninstall the drivers either way. I just hope I can get Jungle Flasher to work on my computer again. I have tried to use it for one Hitachi, it didn't detect it, but did detect another one I did.
But what about the powering off and on during the before the erase. Do I have to just cut the drive off or can I hit the power button on the xbox? As I said, i don't have a connectivity kit so I will be powering it from the xbox. I know I can pull the power plug out of the back to stop the drive from shutting but I don't know if I can unplug it, plug it back in and hit the power button within a second.

I believe you are going to need to pull the power from the DVD drive and put it back in right away. You might be able to get away with powering off the 360 and turn it back on. Remember with the LiteON, you can't brick it by just erasing the firmware.

I would almost recommend keeping the liteon as well. Ripping to the hard drive will minimize your drive use, but I think the liteons are among the best drives. It works great for me.

Agreed. I've never had a problem with my Lite-ON so far and never a problem with my BenQ. Very solid drives. Sammy's are good drives too and Hitachis are the worst.

Yeah, I know that the Lite-On's are suppose to be good drives, and I know the BenQ's are highly regarded. I just figure since the BenQ already has some wear on it I might as well use it until it starts messing up that way the lite-on will be fresh if I ever do have a problem.

I'd flash the lite-on, use it for games and use the BENQ in 0800 mode to rip games. The same setup I use here :)

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Good idea PS2Menace! I just need to replace my computer case with a regular one(I have a slimline) so I can put two drives in it, :-). It was a good computer for the space I had, but now I need something more...practical
