Windows 7 RC available for download

article published on 5 May, 2009

The software giant Microsoft has officially started distributing the Release Candidate version of Windows 7. As expected, today they expanded the distribution to all of us average Joes, who now get a hold of the future de facto operating system. The release candidate is said to include the same set of features as the final product so it will provide a good glimpse into Windows 7. Microsoft ... [ read the full article ]

Only if it were true.

"Oh man you just made me spit coffee on my monitor! " - Sorry, I hopy your screen is OK.

"rubbish.. unix has supported multiple cpu's since the dawn of time.." - Multiple CPU support is not new to windows 7! It's just how it uses them that has changed.

"Anybody know how big the download is? " - The x64 image is about 3.0GB; don't waist your time with the x86 version.

"no zipp.. it's just different.. just bacause something seems familiar don't forget.. to those of us who prehaps see it once every few weeks it's the M$ product that is hard work and old fashioned... and unintuitive and restrictive and limiting... that's apart from being in your face popping those popups all the bloody time when you are trying to do ANYTHING AT ALL ... and how many reboots in 2 hours installing anything???.. outmoded monolithic garbage.. sorry.. it's the truth." - You clearly do not know how to dissable UAC. It is much easier than compiling your own kernal.

"Yes but nothing runs on it and you have to take classes to be able to use the bloodly thing right" - Plus believe it or not, some people use Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and maybe even ActiveX. Ever tried playing GTAIV on linux? There are lots of programs that either will not run on linux, or require massive setup just to run slowly on linux.

So far it is looking good. I have pctools free firewall and avg free antivirus installed with no problems.
It runs a little slow (GUI) on my amd 3000 single core/1gb ram/ati9600 pro video card but nothing to drastic (it will run on 512mb of ram). I have some older games that play well on it (halo/bf2/halflife2). Disabling the Aero interface does speed up the GUI but then it looks worst than XP. Windowblinds is not compatible with windows 7.

Downside it took me 3 hours to find drivers for an older soundcard that I'm using, but it works now. Also I installed the xp virtual addon but it won't run on my computer (no hardware support). Can't find how to see my other computers on the LAN yet (no obvious my network places like xp), but I have no problem playing head to head games over the LAN.

I haven't read any manual/directions on how to use Windows 7, I prefer to test it using XP as a guideline. So far nothing an XP user will have problems with.

The good thing about windose everything is on it and crackers and hackers are making the damn thing better, sure you have to go through steps to protect it from some hackers/crackers,ect but even still Windose has the benefit of more people trying to make it work better its just easier to use and operate than any other OS out there.

I've had Windows 7 for about a month now. And my verdict is it's a stripped down Vista. Microsoft got rid of all the bloatware, (like dreamscene). It boot up fast like XP. The task bar; you either love it or hate it. Other than that, it feels like Vista.

Been using RC1 for a few weeks now... Yes, it's quite a bit better than Vista, but I'll still stick with XP (for PC use)...at least until W7 SP1 comes out 4-6 mos. after the 'golden' version.

Unless you have components/peripherals w/o 64-bit drivers you want to test with it!

It says that 1 GB of RAM is required for the x86 version. So does that mean it'll run like crap if your PC only has 1 GB RAM?

It runs around 550MB when idle with AV installed... you should be fine with 1GB of RAM.

I'm starting to like it...it runs all my Vista64 apps, plus a few that would not run on Vista64. Even runs my ESET security suite without issue, and ESET's firewall runs MUCH faster on Windows 7 than it did on Vista. I hate the taskbar...it takes up twice as much room as the old one to do the same thing, and there is no "classic start menu" option...but other than those issues I am very happy so far. As for drivers, it works perfectly with every Vista64 driver I have tried.

I don't consider using 32bit as wasted time. It does what it says on the tin. I don't get overly excited by 64-bit, been using 64-bit for 9years at work on proper systems. :p

Eh ??, I have proceeded with this process, all it does is go to a new page after language selection, does not go into the download process, only a revolving circle trying to go to the next step?

Windows 7 Screens

From the above, I had the beta build installed on a MUCH older system and it was running about as fast as XP (sorry, I've since lost the benchmark numbers.) Ideally you would want 1gb of memory at the very least; just as in Vista, if the video card doesn't support Aero, it will be disabled.

And why all the fuss over the moved/changed shortcuts, interface, etc.? YES, it is a pain in the butt, but it's just like Vista, except a FEW things have been moved back into logical places, where it is easier to find.

And for those that keep quibling over the "show desktop" button it's the small box next to the system clock!!! LOL.

Did people complain this much when 98/ME jumped to XP?

win 7 beta, the desktop crashed on me every few mintues as did cod4,
xp bsoded every few hours and everytime i installed games
vista 64 since july 07, never had one bsod due to it, bar when i was pushing my OCs, hardky any crashes, bar nvidias early drivers.

personally, IMO vista 64 was the best OS to come out, but i like moving on. one thing i like about vista is my personal taskbar:

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk50/shaffaaf27/bkground.png

can i do that in win7 rc1, as i could find a way to do that in the beta

Yes you can do that easily, I had something like that briefly during the very early beta.

I have been using Windows 7 since it was first released. I like it a lot. When they first released it, I had issues with my laptop's wireless connection connecting to various networks and having to reboot to get it to work short term. Since that first build, its worked great and it's way faster and more stable then Vista has been for me. I never really liked Vista but Windows 7 has changed my view on a windows product from M$. I think this is a step in a better direction with this OS and hopefully they don't find new ways to F' it up.

Yeah as i've said before, in my opinion Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Let's hope it stays that way by the time it hits Retail or it can bugger right off.

Let's face it. I skipped Vista because:
A) it sucked
B) XP was sufficient

But XP is no longer sufficient. The memory limitations and other restrictions are just going to leave XP in the dust. At some point, whether you want to or not you're going to have to upgrade.

I'm cautiously optimistic that Win7 will be acceptable.
Cooler talk seems to indicate that it won't be too bad.

Oh, Im sorry... Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours?
