Hi, I am considering buying a PS3 but from what I'm reading in the forums, the blu ray drive seems to die on a lot of people's console. I was wondering what is a fair estimate of how long it will take (on average) for the PS3 to fail? Were they overplayed or does it just happen naturally? And are you able to return the console to Best Buy (or wherever you bought it) for a refund or do you have to send it in to Sony? Also, this might be the wrong forum to be posting about this, but how about the Xbox 360? Have they fully fixed all their system errors?

Thanks

I don't think the PS3s' blu ray drive dying is as common as the forums that you've been going to make it out to be. I have a launch 60GB PS3 I have had 0 issues with it. To date the PS3's fail rate is 3%.
The only way a store would take your defective product back is if you returned it within their policy and every store has a different policy. If your past the store warranty then now you have to deal with the manufacturers warranty which usually mean you will have to have it shipped.
As far as the 360 fail rate it may have gone down but not a whole lot. Your still looking at the 30% range for the 360. In fact they just extended the warranty for the "E74 error" that some 360 owners have been getting.

Where are you getting your stats, Bawango? I don't doubt you, but I've just been looking for stats myself for a while now and haven't had very reliable sources.

And I want to make some sort of jab at Microsoft right now for general inferiority of products (I'm now using Ubuntu and happy with it), but that'd just be bad of me.

...almost as bad as Windows. GOD, I just had to do it.

But anyway, my 60GB PS3 has likewise had zero problems with it... that I've noticed. It's been working pretty flawlessly since I first got it.

Well there's an age old saying, "they dont make them like the used to" and it's true! Back in the day everything was made to last, these days companies actually design things to only last an average of 5 years!

Why only sell your customer one item which they can used for 10-15 years when you can build it cheaper and make it de faster thereby making them have to buy a new one every 5 years thereby increasing your profits by 200-300%!

It's jus the capitalistic consumer world we live in, their out to make as much proft as possible whilst spending the least amount of money.

Dont believe me? Have a look at all your electronics. how many time have you had to replace things like your hair dryer and how many times have you had to get your washing machine and dryer services for major repairs n the last 10-20 years?

You have to remember that it will look like lots of people are asking how to fix their PS3 however people who have no problems don't come to the forum to say 'my PS3 is working fine'!

From all the information I have seen, read & gathered the failure rate for PS3's & Wii's are well within acceptable industry standards of 1-3%. If you want extra insurance buy it additionally for the peace of mind from the store you get it.

I got my stats from where everyone else is getting it. The interweb. I am sure I read somewhere along the way where the PS3 and Wii have a 1 to 3% fail rate. I would also would like to know as how people come up with "fail rate statistics". I know with HDD is they put x-amount of HDD in a room, run it for long periods of time and at the end of a test run they look at how many HDD are still working. That how they come up with HDD fail rate..well in a nutshell. I am sure it's more complex than the way I explained it. Also just by my personal experience. All my co-workers own a PS3. That's 4 of us and 1 out of the 4 which is an 80GB model that was the last PS3 models with backwards compatibility had to be sent back to Sony. The drive was producing some kind of oil like substance that was getting onto the Blu Ray disc when ejected. I have a 360 as well that was bought last June and it's been working fine but then again I don't really use it all that much.
