Hi. I wanted to know the history of 321studios products. The reason for this is that I wanted to know if I have a ripper version product or not. I noticed on the forums that some people can get on the ftp site to download their products but I can't seem to get on. I think you need a username and password but I have no clue what the password is to gain acess to it. If anyone can get on, can you list what products they have on their ftp site along with the different versions. I have read that the site replaced it with ripper free versions of their product but I do not know what versions they distribute ripper free. I was able to download some off a site but the site claim its ripper free. I always thought dvd x copy platinum version 3.2.1 is not ripper free, but the site where i downloaded from claims that the platinum version 3.2.1 is ripper free. Maybe this site got it off 321 studios ftp site and maybe 321 studios posted a modified ripper free version for that platinum. I checked the site and there is no history of every version that came out for their products. Also, I wouldn't know what version they started to have ripper free versions. Some people claims that a product is ripper free depending on when you downloaded it because I think on February 20th was when they posted a ripper free version of their products. I just wanted to verify if the stuff I downloaded was ripper free or not. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry. I forgot to mention what's up with usercodes for activation of dvd x copy platinum products? I thought you only need a license number and password. Can anyone tell me more info about usercodes, phone activation, and internet connection related to activation of dvd x copy products. I bought dvd x copy gold from best buy and only had a license number and password.

Platinum 3.2.1 has the ripper, all ripper free products will have the letter RF included somewhere. Anything above Platinum 4.0.8 I think is ripper free. Licence ID and Password is all you need to activate you product online, providing your copy of the software is legitimate and you License ID and Password are valid.

You suggest - get DVD Decrypter ... whats the big deal?"
My question - how do you feel about the fact that it is
illegal to download that software in the United States?

Use DVD Shrink 3.1.7, AnyDVD (Takes less time as it decrypts DVDs "On the fly") and Nero 6. It works like a beauty. Plus, if you don't have the $ to buy AnyDVD and Nero, you can always use DVD Decrypter or DVD43 (Its like AnyDVD only free) and almost ANY burning program to back up your DVDs.

Huh? Illegal to download what software? Unless you've unlawfully willingly "hacked" into some place you know you shouldn't be it's not illegal to download -any- software.

What is it you think is illegal to d/l?

If you go to the DVD Decrypter link shown above you will
find the statement to which I refer.
At this time it IS illegal to distribute "ripper" type
software of this sort in the U.S.
Read their 'Disclaimer' and decide for yourself. In my
opinion, and that's simply my opinion, a D/L from that
site could be defined illegal.

You're correct! That is the Afterdawn.com take on Decrypter. I'm surprised that disclaimer isn't on all the ripper d/l links on Afterdawn; DVD Shrink, AnyDVD, SmartRipper, etc., most of the list located here http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/

The DVD Decrypter website (dvddecrypter.com) offers up no statement onn legality.

Thanks RWG -
I am the Newbie, albeit well over 70 years old. My
question was not intended as sarcasm, but as a valid
concern. Later, I ran across another site, D/L's the
program, have used it, and must add that it works well.
I have been using DVD XCopy XPress with fairly good
results up until I upped the CPU from 1.6 to 2.4ghz.
At that point XCopy started to freeze the 'puter on
both disc-read and (even worse) disc-burn. I also
down loaded Nero 6... and it worked like a charm.
Any comments or advice re 'dvdshrink317'?

You've got at least 18 years on me. :-)

I -live- by DVD Shrink. I use it 99.44% of the time to backup DVDs. And 90% of that is done using re-author. I select the main movie (full screen if offered), English audio tracks and English subtitles.

I burn with Nero - DVD-Video option.

I have the 321Studios programs also - wish I'd found Shrink before I spent $150 on Copy DVD, X Copy, Express and the free 'upgrade' to Platinum.

Tnx for your comments.
I've been using DVD XCopy XPress with fair results with
a 1.6ghz cpu but when I upped to a 2.4 I started to have very freguent freezes. I tried DVD Decrypter for the
rip to hard drive with total success, and the burn to
disk with Nero...also successful. Then I tried it all
with DVD Shrink for both rip and burn. Total success.
It seems to me that the burn with DVD Shrink was much
faster than Nero, which prompts me to ask why your burn
preference is for Nero rather than Shrink?
What I find so amazing is that the freebie software is
so good, and the 321 stuff is so punk.

X Copy 1.5.2 and Express 2.5.2 worked ok for me most of the time. Platinum never did. I'm running an AMD 2200+ (about 1.8GHz) in this machine. When I started using Shrink at version 2.2 it was far better than the 321Studios software because I was able to select what to compress and how much to compress it.

I keep my files on HD until I've watched all the movies I've backed up. I have 2 buddies I swap backed up discs with and also check out movies at the library. I may backup 8-10 movies a week - then go through a dry spell where I don't have any to backup.

DVD Shrink itself doesn't burn movies. You set your Preferences to 'auto-burn' with Nero (using IFO, BUP and VOB files) or DVD Decrypter (using ISO disc image). I tried auto-burn with the Arita blanks I have and made a couple coasters. So I burn manually at 2.4X - they seem to be less prone to error at a slower burn speed for me.

Umm, maybe as a newbie I did something that wasn't
supposed to happen but... I D/L'd DVD Shrink ver 3.1
recently, and today used it for the rip, and then
immediately after finishing, it offered to do the
burn also. That's what led to my comment that it
seemed (at 4x) to be faster than Nero.
Honest Injun, I used DVD Shrink from start to finish.

You got the results that Shrink is setup for. Start Shrink, click on Edit and Preferences - you'll get 5 tabs of settings to fart with (in ver. 3.1.7). I don't remember how many tabs 3.1 offers. After you open a DVD, or Files that may be on your HD, the quick analysis runs. When Shrink has your movie opened and you click Backup you get 4 tabs of settings and info.

You have 'Burn with Nero' checked and Nero installed. If you didn't Shrink would have prompted you for something. There's not a thing wrong with your settings if you're satisfied. That's why they're called Preferences. :-)

What version of Nero are you using, a ver. 6.x?

You are correct.
And I had beginner's luck.
Went looking for Shrink's settings and
found "Burn with Nero" checked.
I was not aware of this during my burn.
The burn was done (by default, I suppose)
at 4x such that the movie of 110 minutes
plus the extras was done in something like
twenty-five minutes total. My success rate
with DVD XCopy was roughly 50%.
With Nero 6.3.0.3 so far it's been 100%.
tnx, rr

I have an earlier version and I would like to transfer it to my new computer. Is there any where on the net that the older versions are archieved?

Or, now would I transfer the entire program?

If you're refering to DVDXCOPY or some 321Studios.com software I don't know where you would go to get a 'non RF' version. If you have an existing account at 321studios.com it'd be worth a call or an email to customer service, you're entitled to three instalations before your ID number is rendered useless. Even then you simply call or email and they'll reset your ID number.

If you're using DVD Shrink you don't need DVD43. DVD43 cuts through CSS but doesn't crack Macrovision. DVD Shrink does both itself as well as setting your backup to Region free.

true but, it takes a shorter amount of time to use DVD43 to crack the CSS encryption, then, let DVD Shrink get rid of Macrovision protection.

If you have the file that installs DVD X COPY (or whatever 321studios.com program you have) just burn it to a CD or email it to yourself - get it to your other machine and install it.

If it's not the one program you downloaded from 321studios.com (for example dvdxcopy_v.3.2.1._full_install.exe) and you're trying to pick pieces of a program off one computer and put it on another it isn't going to work. You need a file that installs the entire program.

luck
