Well I have a very simple, yet, to my knowledge after some time on google, not addressed question. That is whether it is possible to take a firmware flashed xbox 360 disc drive from a broken machine and transplant it into a new, working xbox 360 to avoid having to flash it again. This question arose recently when I got the 3 red rings. Upon researching the problem online, I found a simple xclamp procedure would fix the problem, which it did.... For a week (not even excessive game play due to paranoia on my part). Being the impatient person I am, I say screw it, I'll buy an arcade system for dirt cheap and have it modded. Then the idea dawned on me that I could simply switch disc drives. If I'm not mistaken, the firmware flash is done to the disc drive. Thus we come to the point of all this. Is my idea of doing a disc drive transplant from one xbox (modded to play backups) to another possible (which I think it logically is), and if so, is there any risk beyond voiding the warranty, which I don't really care about?

Again, if I'm not mistaken, it should be a simple matter of opening it up, popping out the new disc drive and popping in the old. If anyone has any insight to this either confirming my idea, or negating it, please let me know.

Thanks

its impossible as the DVD drive and the motherboard of the xbox are linked via a DVD key ... if you use a DVD drive from another xbox the keys won't match and it won't play any games.

Not that easy. You have to read the dvd key from the new drive and flash it (in iXtreme firmware or newly created original firmware) to the old one. Also you might have to spoof the old drive if it is different from the new one.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Alright. Well thanks for that. Saves me the trouble of doing and finding out it didn't work. I guess I was thinking that a drive is a drive. Although, just to clarify, having the old drive flashed is not enough, right? It doesn't matter that the old drive is flashed, thus not needing a key anymore, which would then allow it to by-pass that security? If I understand you guys correctly.

I am curious, is there an easy way to either change or remove the key to allow this transplant? Or would it require a fairly in depth knowledge of the programing (which I don't have) on the drive and other components?

Thanks again.

it doesn't work that way.. all drives whether they are flash or not flashed need to have the exact DVD key for the xbox system you're installing it into. there is no way to circumvent that... the keys must match no matter what

you need to read up on flashing xbox 360's ... there's tons of information available... extract the DVD key from your current xbox and use it to install the custom firmware. the process is established and well documented there is no need for guessing games.
