i've got an open tray error when i put in an original xbox game. if i put in an audio cd or dvd (movie) both original or copy, it plays them fine.

but if i put in an original game (either xbox 1 or 360), i get the open tray error. you can hear the drive spin, it makes a slightly clicking noise (the reading head going up and down i presume) and after some read tries i get the tray open error. with audio and movie cd's/dvd, both copies and originals, they run just fine immediately. any thoughts on it? opening it up is not a problem, since warranty has expired. so that will not be an issue.

btw.
the 360 is still stock, didn't flash anything (firmware etc.).

It may be the laser, you could try doing a pot tweak (forum search for tuts).

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

You might want to trying cleaning the laser with a q-tip and rubbing alchol first. The try the pot tweak like Eish said. In my experince tho your drive is getting ready to die, so you might want to start checking Ebay for them.

thanx for all your replies.
i tried cleaning the lens, pot tweaking i will only do as a last resort. but since dvd's and cd's actually read, the problem must be somewhere else i believe.

i also tried some sort of a plastic band trick (on the rails), that didn't do me no good either.

a question:
how come dvd's and audio cd's play well? with my old xbox and ps2, if the lens started dying it wouldn't play dvd's at all. then cd's would die... with total dead as a result

but...... i bought it second hand from an original owner, so he claims. he claims it was in original state (not flashed at all), though the seal was broken. he claimed he tried to open it up, which he couldn't...

but, when i put in a copy of an xbox 1 game, it reads the disc and i get the message that i need a harddrive to play this original(?) xbox 1 game.... so, i must conclude that it has been flashed by someone or the 360 has native support for running copies of xbox 1 games (which i don't believe and off course is not the case).

any tips on trying to find out which firmware is on it?

Do you get a white screen saying in order to play disc, blah blah blah? May not be the orginial drive and you can't just pop in any drive and have it work other than dvds, cds, etc. Have you ever played a game?

nah, i don't get any message. it just tries to read sometime and then i get open tray message and the game is not reading anymore.

i only tried it with original xbox 1 games and copies since i do not have any 360 games. apparantly, the 360 plays copies of xbox 1 games as long as they are supported. the copies i have are not supported, only original game is...

well, i will try to find an original 360 game, see what that does. for now, after cleaning it a couple of times, the original xbox 1 games that are compatible work, dvd's and cd's work fine.

Original xbox1 games work even with an unflashed 360 as long as you have the HDD. Xbox1 backups will work but they have to burnt to dvd+r dl media (just like 360 games) and re-ripped from original xbox1 games. If you have a modified xbox1 backup that has a patched default.xex or whatever it's called then it won't play on a 360 period.

Anyway, your problem is def. the laser. You can attempt the pot tweak but it's also good to just buy a new laser. They run no more than $10-15 on ebay. Installing a laser is a breeze.

thanx for that information..... but a xbox 1 game (copy) either dvd minus or plus work just fine in my 360. my copies are single layer either plus or minus (xbox 1 format) and work in my 360.

well, iŽll give it a pot tweak in that case. if the laser is the problem, iŽll pot tweak it for now. iŽll look into a replacement on ebay.

Your xbox is flashed with xtreme 5.2 more than likely. It had support for single layer xbox1 backups.

well i'm still new to the 360 scene, so i will download a copy of a 360 game and try to run a copy in the drive. see what that does. then i will find out. if it is not, i need to flash the firmware anyways.

If a backup game works in your 360(xbox1 or 360), then we can assumed it is flashed, most common problem with bad flash is exactly the problem you are we having!!

I will start by finding if indeed is flash or not, and if it is then just reflashed the drive
