I was thinking of buying a BenQ VAD6038 drive and use the key from my present Xbox 360 BenQ VAD6038 drive to flash the new drive, so I can keep it as a spare just in case my original drive dies. Has anyone done this?

yes that is no problem ... but really i don't see the point of having a backup laying around... IF sometime down the road the DVD drive died you could just buy one then... and flash it...
as long as you have the key and .bin files backed up it would be a simple process... no reason to have a spare laying around collecting dust
Thanks for the quick response Donaldo. OK, I'm just a bit worried about the availability of these drives further down the track and the less common they are the higher the price you have to pay for them that's all? At the moment I can pick one up for AU$60.00 all up.
I suppose you could use the spare benq to backup games, but you'd be better off just buying a rrod 360 of ebay for $20, then fix it and reflash, then you have a backup incase you get banned from live

ya i was thinking that was your concern... BUT ... as long as you have the key and relevant .bin files you can spoof ANY dvd drive in place of your benq.
so if somehow benq's were hard to come by you could substitute a samsung, liteon, etc etc. this is called "spoofing" and is very common.

Haven't tried fixing RROD before?
I was thinking of using it to backup games but dont you need the ixtreme 1.6 firmware to do that?
You can get most rrod repaired for like $30... so all up that's like $50... a spare disc drive if you to buy it new would be about $23 (just a guess).
I'm not sure if you need 1.6 firmware to backup games w/ drive, but i don't think you do... i'm pretty sure you just need a connectivity kit and some other crap... i heard about it before 1.6 was near release, so i think you don't
Thanks Donaldo,
So you can use the Key .bin files from your original Xbox drive on any drive, that's great! so I really dont need a backup drive. I wont bother getting a spare drive then thanks.
chris 4160,
If I did get a spare drive I would put to use to rip games but at the moment I use a samsung drive with Kreon firmware and it does the job perfectly.

It's called 0800 support, there are already firmwares that support this. The only news iXtreme 1.6 has about this is that you can still use a drive with 0800 support on live.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
