Wait, is the xbox an xbox 1 or xbox 360. Do you have xbox live? If you do have live, and update does not work, then game does not work... simple as that. If you do not have xbox live, then you can get a disc sent to you from ms, then you just download the update to make it backwards compatiable[no i will not give you the link, just search on xbox.com].
I was bored, so i got the link for you, if you have a dvd burner just download the file and play it on xbox... btw what is the full name of the game you are trying to play... from the top of my head, the NFS underground+most wanted are compatible
