I'm not sure whether or not to bite the bullet and string a large wire across my living room, or just stay with my mediocre wireless. I am using an xbox 360 wireless networking adapter to go on xbox live... but the connection sucks (i think it's something to do with my incompatiable motoroal SBG900 gateway)... but for some reason, instead of lagging, it usually just kicks me from the game or just has 1 bar. I found this tut here to increase wifi but that thing is hideous (probably even worse then wire)). I've also tried moving my gateway a few feet so there is a straight 35 ft hallway (with nothing to interfere [like the numerous double brick wall... really frustrating]) but the cord between my internet port and my router (not ethernet cable) is like 3 ft, so that is impossible.

So what i'm really trying to ask is if anybody else has experienced this problem with wireless, and did you just change to wired. Also, is there a problem with my isp... i currently have cable broadband, with this connection

I know the upload is hideous (optimal upload for xbox live hosting is like 0.8mb/s)... but i have got no idea of how to increase it [i know it is possible, because the average upload in my area with the same isp is like 0.63!)

PS the distance between my router and 360 is like 50ft.

yea that upload looks bad, and unforutantlly when you are using xbox live, you are doing alot of uploading. so i dont think that its your wireless connection. I would ask your isp to come out to your house and diganose your connection. they will do it for free, and they will clearly be able to see the poor upload. could be your isp's problem. not yours! so i would start there. see what your connection is without going through your router. with a connection like yours i would think you would be pulling a 1.0 u/l.

I agree with homesick. Your download speed, 9mb/s is good. I would have the ISP come out and diagnose the upload speed because to have that poor a ratio of upload speed to download speed is shocking imo. If the ISP fix the problem, it should improve the quality of xbox live over the wireless connection, therefore there'd be no need for wired. Hope this helps.
P.S
<My connection, and I play perfectly over xbox live and the download speed is alot less than yours, this proves that the problem is your upload speed.

No problems on this end. You need to contact your ISP.

Bad thing is.. That's slow for me :(

I need 50MB/s and a 10MB/S upload, not the 3 meg upload.

Just for kicks, this is the speed for the server farthest away from me.

Hi, I have worked with Broadband faults for about 10 years now. It is quite rare for you to get speed issues with just your upstream. The way broadband works means that if you experience noise on your line then it will more than likely effect your downstream rate.

If you want to report a speed issue, you will need to confirm to them that you have done the following checks for them to raise a fault,,

1. That your system has been scanned for virus' - ensure your software has the latest definitions and try an online scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com

2. That you have tested the connection when plugged directly into your master phone socket and all other telephony devices are detached ie nothing else is connected to the phone circuit, with an alternative microfilter. This is very important and failure to perform may result in abortive BT call out charges. Let us know if the speed is equally slow in this instance.

3. Can/have you tested an alternate modem/router or test your equipment at any ADSL enabled location?

4. Please also ensure you have checked for trojans and spyware on your system (or any other pcs on your network if there is one) to ensure that these are not causing any complementary traffic which may be slowing your system down.

5. If you are running a wireless network, ensure it is secured from external access so that no one else can use your connection. Please ensure you test the speed when hardwired to the router.

6. That you've tested the connection with all firewalls lowered to see if this helps.

7. Your hardware is uninstalled and reinstalled if a USB/PCI modem, or reset to firmware defaults and reconfigured if a router.

If you can confirm what country you are in and what ISP your with, i can prolly give you some more diags.

no offense, but when i was with time warner cable i just called them and said come fix my stuff. and they did, no questions asked. same with my new isp Pine Tree Cable, which is a no name company, its most likely their equipment, and their line, if they charge you to look at it, then it is time to switch your isp.

I rang up my isp and they said to send someone out there may be additional charges (if the technicians deem there is nothing wrong)... which sucks... but if they do come out, what do they do?

@ miketrev
I'm in australia and i'm with telstra (bigpond). I've also got cable, not dsl.

okay, i've found out that my plan is capped to 8mb/s dl and 0.128 mb/s ul... but for some reason i can get 9.5mb/s dl. They're offering to uncap the plan for an extra $10 a month (thats $69.95 total for 12 gb bandwidth a month)... but seeing though i'm in an area w\o superfast broadband (very convinient), uncapping it will only increase it to 17mb/s dl and 0.256 mb/s upload (if there was superfast cables in my area it would be 30mb/s dl and 1mb/s ul).

So my question is, will 17 mb/s dl and 0.256 ul [that is the very fastest plan available in my area) increase xbox live dramatically?

well technically speaking, yes, you will be u/l at twice the speed. but i dunno if you will notice the difference or not. s just say, you will be "less laggy"

Should be OK as long as your ISP's network is half decent.

I have used XBOX live on a fixed rate IPStream 500 product (512 down 256 up) and it ran fine although you won't have uber low latency.

At that speed, I would also suggest going wired rather than wireless as every little helps.

I'm wired and it definetly helps with the speed. I had the xbox wireless bridge for my xbox 360 and it was really laggy on xbox live so I ran a cable and dropped it in my room and now I hardly ever get lag. So IMO wired definetly helps speed..

I've been doing some research and it seems that the country with the best average download speed is in the Republic of Korea, with 17.83mb/s... i didn't even know that there was broadband available there (i'm assuming that high download speed comes from the military). But Australia is down in no. 38 with 4.69mb/s... atleast i'm above average in my country for download
