Ok so I will start with a little background with my Xbox 360. I bought it on Ebay with a broken DVD drive figuring I could replace and use the system. Now just to clear the air used to have RROD and was fixed with xclamp fix. Now I recieved the Xbox and powered it up to see what exactly was wrong with the DVD drive. As soon as I powered it up the middle light started flashing. So I bought a new DVD player with same firmware version and hardware version as my old one. Now the Xbox powers up and gets to the GUI and I can play games off the hard drive and everything seems fine. Now if I try to eject the DVD drive the light in the middle blinks a second but DVD drive does not respond. It also shows on the screen opening/closing/reading but does nothing.
So I am at a loss does this mean it needs to be flashed or something? I thought it only had to be flashed if the firmware version was different? I also found that the DVD drive that came with my Xbox that did not work at all was missing a pulley cable and a ribbon cable. So I took the ribbon cable and the pulley cable from the one I bought. Now the original drive does the same EXACT thing as the new one. Is this an actual motherboard issue or something? Since this was bought on Ebay and repaired before is there a way to tell if the Hitachi DVD drive was supposed to be in this system?? Any help or info will be greatly appreciated.

The original drive that came with that 360 contains a key, and without that key, it won't be able to play games from disc. You will need to extract the key from the first drive, and flash it to the new one. Read the Jungle Flasher tutorial linked in my signature.

Well I put the one that came with my system back in with the ribbon cable and "rubber band" from the one I bought. So the DVD drive currently in my system as far as I know is the original one. Is there a way to see if this is true or if it a replacement as well?

well since it doesn't work when you put the original drive back in... you will have to attempt to dump it ... get the key and other .bin files and spoof them onto the replacement you bought...
then put the replacement in and see if it loads games off the dvd drive

Thank you I will give that a try and report my progress. I am lucky to have a SATA controller compatible with the Xbox drives hehe.

Ok so I started the dump process but I am running into some issues with both drives. Neither drive will actually open or respond in any way. All of the tutorials say to ensure it is in mode b by ejecting the drive well my drive will not eject. Even if I skip this step and try to boot into windows I get no response there either. So my next question is if there is any issues or problems that can exist on the motherboard of the Xbox? The system will boot (without getting the blinking light in the middle saying no dvd drive). Just the DVD rom gives no response at all. I even have placed a DVD/game diectly into the drive manually and it will not even read it. Being a technician for 10 years usually this indicates a motherboad issue since both drives acting exactly the same. I just have zero experience fixing xboxs.

Is it getting power? Pull the cover, move the lense back. Without the cover on, it should move forward and blink twice. Does this happen? May be a dead drive.

It doesn't move at all in either drive. So chances are it is a dead drive? Is there a voltage test I can do to verify that both my drives are dead? I am pretty handy with a voltmeter and I am electronicly inclined. I just would hate to buy a 2nd DVD (3rd total since one came with it) drive to discover it is my motherboard causing this.

Pretty good idea. Do the fans kick on the motherboard? You sure the power brick is working? Check the power source to the DVD drive and go from there. You can always get power another way if you need to. Belenos would know.

I can boot and play the Xbox if I connect a hard drive to it. Wireless controllers connect and everything. I just need the DVD drive to play games. So everything seems to work except the DVD drive which when I push the eject button the power light will blink like it wants to open but no gears/motors even twitch.

Probably crap. Do you have another drive? If the laser doesn't blink it's no good. If it lights up, sounds like it's getting power.

Yeah both drives I have do the same thing give no response at all. Only response I get is when I hit the eject button on the Xbox the power light will blink on the system but nothing else happens. The laser, gears, pullies, or motors don't even twitch on either drive.

Hmm. Check power and go from there.

Going from chasis ground I took a volt meter with the Xbox on and took some readings.
Using the pin layout I found for the "2 wire" trick used to put it in mode b.

So it looks like there is your normal 12 and 5 volt power system similiar to a PC power source. I don't know what is supposed to be at each pin but that is what I got.

ok found a technical document with all the voltages and well those are all correct. So I guess I have to buy yet another DVD drive and try it out. I just wanted to exhaust all other options before I dropped another 30 bucks into this. So far I only have spent 91 bucks so still doing pretty good.

If you do, get one from modchip.ca. They sell brand new BenQ drives (my opinion are the best ones) for like $30.00. I would also see if you can test the drives in a another box.
