Wasabi Zero- can't update?

Hi all. Just did my first wii mod yesterday. Put on a wasabi zero and all seemed well. My wii is 3.3u and most of the backups I tried worked. Some didn't like Smash Bros failing after starting the game at the load screen. I downloaded the 1.4 update rar files from Wasabi and used magiciso to burn them as an iso disc. When I first pop it in, I get the gamecube disc to pop up, and when I click to start it, the wii resets and goes back to the main menu. (usually at this point, it can't read the disc) About 80% of the other backups work (gamecube games work) but some others like Boom Blox fail after trying to load.

Do I HAVE to update with the wasabi update disc to correct this, or is possibly a dip switch or connection on the chip not working well? I can play stuff like zelda and wii music so I don't think it's that. Maybe i'm burning the iso wrong but if so, why does it show up as a gamecube disc at least? I'm using memorex dvdr's if that matters.
