I was thinking about sending my 360 to someone to get modded, but I was kinda wondering about him. I found him on craigslist and lives in the same town. He refuses me meet me at his house and says to mod my Lite on drive he needs my Serial Number. His exact wording was, "Make sure you write down your serial number off the chassis i'll need it to backup your drive key."
I was curious does he really need it? I googled around and found no info on needing a serial number to mod a Lite on drive or to do a back up. Should I find someone else? This guy seems a bit iffy and I'm unsure what he can do with this Serial number... can someone let me know?

he can't do anything with your serial number, i don't think you need it, but i always put mine in. i think that you don't have to though. i would just give it to him, he cant do anything with it besides register your xbox, so just call up and make sure its registered before you give it to him.

Oh, so when you are flashing it the program asks for it? Someone else told me he is trying to do something with microsoft and my warranty or something, not sure. Just want to be sure.

yea it does ask you for your consoles serial number, but i cant remember if you have to put in a legit one or not, either way yea he could potentially register your xbox, but that really wouldn't beneift him. so just take the 5 mins to register and don't worry about, it. besides if you ever get the RROD you will be glad you did.

I would definitely register the console with M$ for your own safety as well as for warranty reasons.
However, the modder may be asking for the serial number in order to keep track of the DVD keys for all the consoles he works on. This way if he (or you) ever needs it in the future for a restore or an update, he knows which files are yours by the serial number of your console. No biggie.

hold on, if you're giving him the console, which has the serial number attached, then why can't he just look on the back for the serial number when (if) you send it to him? That seems a bit dodgy to me... but he might not be able to mod the new/old lite ons with his method, so he might need the serial to verify this

That would make sense, but that is not what he said. He said he needed it for backing up my drive key.
@chris, I was just going to take the dvd drive in not the console.
Anywho, I am now having someone else mod it for $5 more that I know is reputable.

Question i used the mod disk 1.53v and it didn't ask me for it at all. I can play my backups with no problem but is it safe to get on Live without putting it in?

my god! give him the da$n serial number, like said before, it is a way to keep up with all the systems he does. if i used 1234567 12345 for every one i have modded i would have hundreds of keys that i would be clueless as to what belonged to who.
as for the correct setial number effecting on line use, it has no effect at all.
call it the dewey decimal system for modding your xbox 360!!!
I have lost all and any respect i had for this site!
