Hi guys...

Its my nephews birthday next month and his mum has said he wants an XBOX 360..She called me and asked me which is the best to buy...Ive looked around and I am confused a little with all the options and not sure which is best to get him...and what are all the differences between arcade, core, elite etc

I actually have a PS3 myself(please dont abuse me, lol)

Reading around has confused me so much I thought I should get some better advice...and this forum has never failed me yet...Helped me buy my HD monitor for my PC/PS3 and always helps with my home cinema needs

Ok...

I hear that you have to pay around £60 for the wireless adapter for XBOX 360 if you wish to connect to a wireless router...Is this true?...Is there a version that comes with This already?

Also from what I understand there are different packages for online play?...but from what I have read you cannot actually play games online unless you have the GOLD package?...Silver package is just to use messaging services and XBOX marketing etc?

From what I have read also the original (white coloured) XBOX 360 isnt HD?...But the Elite(Black) Console is HD?...But I was told by the guy behind the counter in GAME that all the latest 360's are HD...Im not sure this is correct as I have read different online...and none of the standard 360's online have anything about HD in the spec.

The XBOX will have to be able to connect to a wireless router and will be required to play online...HD isnt going to be that important as the boy has a standard TV ATM...but would be nice if he could upgrade to HD later

Any help would be appreciated guys thanx

all new xbox 360 are high-def

gold/silver don't have anything to do with selecting an xbox you set that up after

the major difference is the more expensive ones come with bigger HD's and better cables.. the most basic one, the arcade unit, doesn't even come with a HD and has the most basic cables for connecting it to the TV.

i dont think any of them include wireless you'd have to buy that seperately...

Well actually you can get a memory card to play your games, due to saving game info. HD are nice to have to store games too to save a wear and tear on laser on DVD drive.

Chipset, depends on manufacture date but to get a particular chipset you can try ebay.

Elite has # Black Xbox 360 Elite Console
# 120GB Hard Drive
# Black Wireless Controller
# Black Wired Headset
# Component HD AV Cable
# HDMI Cable

Acarde comes with a wireless controller, this includes an HDMI output, but no HDMI cable.

LOL, well try best buy, walmart or even amazon. But you have to understand, you cant get a system, like your wanting to customize. You either take what is comes with or buy all other items you want.

The Arcade also comes with a 250 MB Memory Stick, that's quite enough if you only want to store gamesaves. But if your nephew ever wants to play an old Xbox 1 game on the console, he needs a harddrive (and best an Xbox Live connection) because the emulatorfiles are on the harddrive.
Also I wouldn't recommend using the M$ wireless stick, it's quite expensive and (as I heard) quite unreliable, I myself use a Wireless-G Gaming Addapter by Linksys, bought off ebay because they aren't produced anymore. It is easy to set up and everything, the only negative aspect it has is that it only supports WEP encrypting.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

250mb isn't sufficient for xbox live (i've used like 1gb on halo just by saving custom maps). I would suggest getting a pro console from your local store... eb games, etc. I think the pro console has more fans (then the arcade), so it runs quieter for longer.

If the pro is out of your price range then i'd suggest buying an arcade from local store) for $200, and then just buy a 20gb hard drive for $20. OR if you want to play on live, there's a package deal here for $100, for a total price of $300.

So here's just an overview
Arcade console ($200) + 20 gb hard drive ($22.57) + extra controller ($50)= $272.57

Pro Console 60gb hard drive($300) + extra controller ($50) = $350
Add another $40 for a 12 month xbox live membership

Also, check the contruction date on the 360 console that you intend to buy (if possible), try to get the newest one you can find.

PS Eisherz, is the wireless g gaming adapter by linksys any good, do you lag at all? I have an official xbox 360 wireless networking adapter but it really isn't worth it, i have the worst connection.

Nope, no lagging on my side and I only have DSL 1000.

aha...interesting to hear about problems with the wireless adapter

He already has problems with his wireless pc in his room...he gets low signal strength because of how far from the router he is

I didnt realise you could use other products for the adapter...I presumed microsoft would monopolise the product for the 360

Any suggestions which to buy?...any links?

You don't need to buy a dedicated gaming router, an old cheapy wifi router off eBay can be used, Linksys for example, £20ish

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

take the premium(pro) cause you'll need the HDD and 60gb of HDD is just enough! + buy yourself a gamepad with the money you save for non buying the elite, so you can play with a friend.

Don't buy a 20 gb hdd off ebay. You don't know what you are getting. I have been sold a fake hard drive before. You'll need a real one if you want to go on live. I suggest you just buy a Pro. I didn't think I'd need a 60 gb but after installing Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon (those games are massive space-wise), you damn well bet I needed it. lol 20 GB is good enough for game saves, game marketplace purchases and that sort of thing but it's not that helpful for playing games off the hard drive. Thankfully I just got to Disc 4 in Lost Odyssey so I can free up some more space on my 60 gig. :D

is a HDD needed to go online?

the kid is most likely just gonna play FIFA09 online...from the disk...I dont see him buying stuff off marketplace either

So i shouldnt buy arcade or elite...i should buy pro?

What i mean is, you don't need to buy any one of those so-called gaming adapters, they're a ripoff. You can just buy a cheapy wifi router and configure it as if it was a gaming adapter. Gaming adapters are just stripped down routers that companies get away with charging stupid amounts of money for.

Creeky, can I use any type of Linksys wifi router?...I've seen how to reverse how they to receive instead of sending signal.

I think you can use almost any router, if i'm wrong someone please correct me. I'll do a quick google., i only read about it in passing as i prefer to run my 360's over ethernet

Same here...my box is running on Ethernet. I've used my laptop in the past but the connection is rather crappy. I read were only certain routers could be configured to receive.

Thanks for the reply.

You don't need a HDD to go online. The included memory unit/internal memory with the Arcade would suffice. The NXE update is like 100+ MB but that will still give you over 100 MB left for game saves, your gamertag, etc. which is plenty I think (depends on the game save file size. Thus far I've seen ranges from 250 KB to 6 MB but I don't have many games at the moment) However it is recommended to have a HDD because then you can install games to the hard drive. Playing games off the hard drive will lower wear on the dvd drive, lower risk for wear on the discs themselves and produce less heat and noise when gaming.
