Hey all, I've been read up on soft modding the 360 for a while now. Lived with a roommate that had one, but didn't want to attempt it on his so I'm now in the process of purchasing one for myself. I will most likely be purchasing the regular Xbox 360 package as I have no need for the Elite and the Arcade lacks the HD capabilities. I have the knowledge I need to flash the drives and I've read up on stealth checking games and whatnot. The information on these forums is amazing!

The only question I have is which drive typically ships with the newer units and has there been a method to flash these drives? As far as I know from a while back, there were issues with the Lite-On drives? I'm sure I'm outdated though, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Lite-ONs have been shipping with XBOX 360's since April of 2008. So a very high chance you will get a Lite-ON.

You will need some hardware to get the job done. The solderless way is nice because it is quick and isn't messy. You will need a probe/spear for the solderless route. You can search for kits such as the CK3 Probe or the Maximus spear. You will have to use those in conjunction with the CK3 connectivity kit or the Xtractor PRO. There is now an USB Xtractor too.

Also you will need a compatible chipset. If you onboard S-ATA doesn't work, you can get a VIA 6421 S-ATA card.

A good tutorial to use is the Jungle Flasher tutorial and it is linked in my signature.
