Help on 3 Red Rings - Did X-Clamp Fix, but still RRoD?

Having the 2 red lights could mean the heatsinks aren't on good enough or that there isn't enough compound. I'd check that out too.

Thanks guys, the console shuts itself down on the 2 lights so there is no baking going on. The power brick also goes from green to orange.
I'll redo it all over AGAIN and then check back.
I'll do the 15 minute shroud thing with the fan, thanks oicurpn.

The reason it shuts down is because the fan is pluged in make sure it's unpluged then let it run for a 1.5 min then shut it off attach the fan puting it back in place then attach the shroud and test after it has had a chance to cool down then test
|

ummm, the reason the console shuts down (if i am understanding what you are talking about correctly) is not because of the fan, but because the cpu is getting too hot. Once it reaches a ceartin tempature, it will shut the console off. if you are trying to bake the console, then you need to keep that cpu cool, while letting everything else roast.

I did all the know fixes to my 360 (xclamp, pennies, heatgun), and it seemed to work alright, for it doesn't go straight to 3 rings, but when I turn it on only the center light comes on solid. The fans come on and the dvd tray works, but no video or sound or anything, and after a few minutes I get three rings.

You need to reflow the GPU again. It can be tricky to do, its best to be sitting in front of the TV with it hooked up when doing it. Loosen the bolts or screws that hold the GPU heatsink on until they are right at or below the motherboard so they don't stop the heatsink from sitting directly on top of the GPU. Turn the xbox on with the GPU heatsink sitting on top of the GPU. Wait for the fans to start going faster like it is about to overheat and then press the heatsink down firmly and evenly across the GPU.
You gotta press it down pretty hard, but be careful to not break the GPU. Do this for a little bit, you should get the green lights and if it worked the video will come back up.
Give that a try and see if you have any luck

Your GPU might be shot. It might not be salvagable. You could find someone to sell it to as a RROD system, even if they can't fix it the drive is worth the purchase in most cases. I know around my area there are guys that sell refurbs for $75 and will take RRoD systems as a partial trade on the refurbs.
You could check into that in your area. I'm not saying the system can't be fixed, some of them are difficult to get just right, but if your having no luck, those are some options.

Sythron don't listen to these guys, your gpu can't be fried if you had it working then it froze. Sounds like you had the screws too tight and flexed the board (rrod 0020) then had ram issues (rrod 0102) then lost the connection with the ground/temp sensor on the gpu, or had poor contact with the cpu die (2 red lights).
PM me with your problem and i'll help you figure it out, seems like here you'll only get bad advice from people who have had good luck with their hackjob repairs.
BTW if you think overheating your xbox without a fan does anything at all you need to monitor the temps on the board when doing so. As i've said in countless posts the lead-free solder has to reach about 440F to melt and reflow properly. You simply can't do this by unplugging the fan.

From the sound of it- not working, working, working a bit... it might be that your screws are not tightened down evenly to same level. The reason for the original x-clamp was so all 4 corners had same force on the CPU, because the clamp was one unit. But this also warped the board=bad. The thing with the screws is that it warps it less- BUT ONLY it you tighten the screws rights. This is the hardest part. all screws need to be tightened all together, to same tightness without bias. But yet over all not too tight.
