I have posted my question on this forum as well searched the entire net for the answer and have got nothing but confliction info.

1. I have Wiikey installed running 3.2u,
2. I don't have homebrew nor do I plan to and I don't have a softmod or anything else, just a plain wiikey for backup play.
3. Punchout is asking for a system update to 4.0 in order to play

My question is very simple:

Can I update a hardmodded Wiikey Wii running 3.2u to 4.0u and still have all my backup's work?

Updating should not effect any modchip.

So it is safe to update to 4.0 firmware. Even if you updated to 4.0 firmware you could still get homebrew to work. So there really is no reason not to update.
