I recently bought a ms28 drive to replace my
360's original ms25 that wouldnt read disks
any longer - dvd movies, original xbox 360
games and xbox 360 backups.

About April 2008 I flashed the original drive (ms25)
from factory firmware to iextreme 1.4 as an ms25 drive.

I kept that firmware on it until the end of March
2009 when I flashed it to ixtreme 1.51 as an ms28.
It suddenly stopped reading disks this past week,
so I bought an ms28 from a local shop to replace it.

I am about to flash the new drive (ms28) with iextreme
1.6 but I dont know if I should flash it as an ms25 or ms28.

With the original drive (ms25) flashed with 1.4 as an ms25
the system made it through the bannings last fall unscathed.
On the other hand since it was flashed with 1.51 as an ms28
for the last month or so its been smooth sailing until it stopped
reading disks this past week.

My main concern here is staying unbanned on xbox live (the
drive was reading original games/backups fine whether flashed as
ms25 or ms28).

So should I flash my new ms28 with 1.6 as a ms25 or ms28 ?

Thanks,
Brett

Well im not sure what your trying to say, but it sounds like you mean if you should spoof to ms25, instead of keeping it ms28? But if this is your question, then yes. Im not the smartest but im like 95% sure the safest thing to do is to spoof as a ms25. I didn't even think it would read games if it was not spoofed as your old drive. But I have never replaced a ms25 for a ms28 or a hitachi 59 for hitachi 79. But i could be wrong. Maybe it doesnt matter, but if it was me id spoof as ms25.

The systems original drive was a ms25.
When I flashed to ixtreme 1.4 I flashed it
as a ms25.

When I recently flashed to 1.51 I flashed it as
a ms28 (Was going on information from another site
that said only flash as a ms25 unless a e66 error
popped up after flashing as a ms28).

So I waant sure whether to flash as a ms25 or ms28 with
1.6 since the drive read all disks when flashed as either
ms25 or ms28.
Hence my primary (only really) concern is staying unbanned.

Thanks,
Brett

you will need to flash the ms28 as a ms25
extract the drivekey from the orig.bin or your modded firmware
replace the drivekey in the 1.6 use firmware toolbox to copy and paste the key into 1.6 use jungle flasher or irpep and replash the drive

You could just take the board from the old drive and put it in the ms28 then no flashing is required and it should work.

When I bought the ms28 this week thats what I did at first - worked fine.
But it still left me with the issue of having ms28 firmware on a board that was originally from an ms25 drive. Again the original drive (before it died this week) read games/dvds fine whether it had 1.4 flashed as ms25 or 1.51 flashed as ms28. Maybe my 360 was manufactured before ms implemented the version tracking/checking of dvd drives in the 360's ?
Anyway I reflashed the drives firmware with 1.6 as an ms25 tonight and
its working well so far.
Thanks,
Brett
