Larry....I once said this guide seemed to complicated but i was wrong. I tried your method on two wiis a couple days ago and everything went excelent! I still would suggest maybe one screen shot of what the root of the SD card should look like with all the files on it. If someone could tell me how to upload a picture onto this thread then i would be more then glad to do it. Ive read in differnt threads that people are having problems and it seems they are having problems because they are not loading all the required files on the root of the sd card. Thanks again for all your help with this guide~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>!

Im new, so bear with me!

hi muffin_79

as far as i know with the backup launcher installed it will avoid the updates so there is no need to use the brick blocker with it, although, having said that, it would be useful to use if you have kids who press buttons on things. overall it wouldnt hurt to run it, but at the moment you can only harm your wii by taking the updates if the game is from a different region (an ntsc update would not be good for pal and vice versa)

Hey larry

Sorry I don't want to read through 11 pages and my certain question isn't easy to search for so I'll ask outright at the risk of getting flamed:

I've been outta the wii scene for a while (no decent games), I have a very old wii w/ the original wiikey d2b installed. Last game I got was brawl, and wario shake it. I'm probably still on 3.2U firmware I want to upgrade now to try out the wii motion plus thing. Since I have a mod chip, are there any precautions or different steps I should take?

OK...I have read through all 11 pages. BTW, GREAT GUIDE!!! Thanks for all your hard work. I have not seen a definitive answer on this question: I have my Wii softmodded and updated to 4.0U with all the bells and whistles (BUL and HBC and USBloader) working great. I just bought Tiger Woods 10 (awesome) retail and the disk channel says I need a system update. I have been loading it through Backup Loader (with retail disk in drive) to avoid update. My question is, can I safely just do the system update via the Nintendo disk channel, or will this screw everything up. I have a launch Wii, NTSC. Please, I don't need someones educated guess....I would like to know for sure what the ramifications are for running the update even though I already have the update installed (hope that made sense).

Thanks in advance!

More then likely it is a IOS update for Motion Plus. As far as I know there isn't much information on this so as to the effect it will have I can not tell you until more information is available.

Hi Larry,

Just wanted to say thanks. Second guide of yours I've followed (did the PSP a while back) and this was just as clear and comprehensive. I'll wait for your PS3 guide next :)

Thanks for the fast reply. I will just deal with the (very slight) hassle of the "Update" on the channel and make sure the kids don't update the Wii... There are some great homebrew programs out there that really enhance the function of the Wii!

Okay, so I did this to my Wii with a few variations

- Instead of installing cIOS38_rev12, I installed cIOS38_rev13b
- I didn't install the Homebrew Channel and Backup Loader Channel from the guide, I instead used BootMii with Banner Bomb and installed Homebrew Channel, then put the latest Backup Loader 0.3 Gamma on the SD card

Other than that, everything was the same, but I have some issues:

When I start the Wii up, I can put a game in and it'll show in the disc menu. However if I go to start it up, it either gives me an error #001, or says that there has been an issue and I must eject the disc and turn off the Wii.

If I go into Hombrew Channel and start up Backup Launcher, telling it to boot with Hooks, if a game is in the Wii, it freezes, if I put the game in the Wii, it freezes.

Any idea/fix for this? Thanks all! And nice comprehensive guide as well, once my GF gets me my GC controller back, I'm installing that part as well :p ^^

I've been searching but I can't get a definite answer. I'm hoping to mod a friends Wii that he just bought so its probably LU64/65. Is it now possible to install homebrew and backup loaders now?

Maybe if you followed the guide instead of winging it you would have a working Wii right now. Sorry to be a dick but the guide is here for a reason..

If I followed the initial guide, it would've given me a redundant channel on my Wii.

Maybe if you've read what I said, you'd see I NEVER anywhere said the Wii wasn't working, it can play fine from the Backup Launcher, and backups work fine along with originals, however one aspect of it does not work correctly.

If I must be bothered to explain myself, anybody using rev 12 of cIOS is using 2 revision old software. 13b is the latest, as stated in the first guide linked to in this guide. Likewise, 0.3 Gamma and Beta can play some games better than each other, and would've liked to keep them in one place rather than having a redundant channel.

If you have to comment next time teegale, make it useful, give me some information I can use.

The reason the guide is linked to rev 12 is because of the sheer amount of problems users are having with 13b. Anyone that uses USB Loader GX will want to use something other than the latest revision.

I realize that, but DVDs are so cheap to buy, I decided to not go overkill, just have what I need.

So I used 13b, I even went back to 12, nada.

Pretty much the only thing I've really changed is that I installed HBC differently which I don't think should affect the process, then run Homebrew Launcher from HBC, which might.

I've tried repeating the process by deleting cIOSv7, then starting the guide from scratch.

I've done almost every step the same, over and over, but still, Wii Start-Up, I can see the game's logo in the disc channel, try to play it, and instantly tells me to turn the Wii off/Eject the disc. It works fine from Backup Launcher, but Backup Launcher With Hooks makes it freeze.

What aspect of the whole installation could make this happen do you ponder?

**EDIT**

Okay, I can't play from the Wii Menu channel, but I'm doing this for my girlfriend and don't want to confuse her.

What aspect of this guide allows the backed up game's logo to be displayed in the Disk Channel, and how to I get rid of it?

You can't boot games via disc channel unless you install cIOSCorp.

Rebooting with hooks is pointless since you have to do it each time you want to boot from Disc Channel. So what is the point of it when you have to run Wiigator to reboot with hooks anyway.

If you want you can try following this guide HERE and install cIOSCorp which will let you boot from disc channel.

Hey man I installed HBC and BootMii on boot2 and it works fine (other than it can't read my wavebird :( )

Anyways, I tried USB loader GX, but not your way. I downloaded the app folder from the USB Loader GX site because I don't want to get into installing cIOS and WAD (I don't know what either of these are).

I clicked on USB Loader GX, and the screen just went black. Mind you, I didn't have any USB devices plugged in, but shouldn't it say something like "No USB plugged in" or is it supposed to go totally black?

Mind, Snes9x GX worked perfectly through homebrew channel.

Larry can you help me out a bit here? I don't understand the point of installing these cIOS or what they even are. And I don't understand why there is a WAD version of USB Loader and a X:/apps version for HBC. What's the difference?

Lastly, what's the difference between the forwarder and the none-forwarder? Any help is appreciated, I was a contributor to this forum back in the days of strikers, brawl etc. So I'd appreciate if someone could lend me a helping hand

Bruce,

From my limited knowledge, you need to install the correct CIOS for the USB Loader to work, otherwise it won't - simple as that!

The Wad version of USB loader is actually just the forwarder (effectively a channel on the Wii Home page that acts as a kind of shortcut to the USB loader, saving you having to go through the Homebrew channel to load it each time). You don't need it if you don't want the shortcut, just plonk the Usbloader_gx folder in the apps folder on your SD card and it will appear in the Homebrew channel.

Hope that helps.

OK What exactly is cIOS? Does it downgrade the firmware of the wii back to 3.2 or something? Doesn't that mean that I won't be able to play newer games?

I'd like to understand what's going on rather than mindlessly following instructions and installing crap on my wii when I might not need to.

Understand where you are coming from - I did quite a bit of digging before I did mine.

Check this link:

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS

It gives a bit of detail about what an IOS is, but from what I can ascertain there isn't just one OS on the Wii, there are lots and so adding or editing some are generally safe as long as they aren't used by the system menu. Certainly my Wii still reports as being 4.0e and has the SD card Icon on the Home screen.

Larry or someone else with more experience of these things can probably give a far better explanation though.

OK I kind of get it now. Last questions:

- What exactly does Ios60patched do?
- What exactly does cIOS38 do? There is a v13b of it on USB Loader's homepage, should that be used instead?
- I already have a wiikey. Do I need to install the cMIOS thingy? What else can I skip installing if I already have a wiikey (mind I still want USB loader so I don't have to bother switching discs)
- Can you send backed-up games to the USB Loader?
- Does using IOSDowngrader mean newer games (3.3 and up) won't work?

Don't know what IOS60 does exactly I'm afraid - I did do it though

V13b is a later version of V12 used in Larry's guide (no I don't know why it seems to vary between being called CIOS36 and CIOS38)

Yes you do need to do it if you have a Wiikey - I have a friend with one who has just installed the USB loader this way.

I didn't install the Gamecube thing or the IOS downgrader and it seems to work fine for me without them.

Yes you can send backed up games to the USB drive with the USB loader

No idea as I didn't install it, but I'm fairly sure it doesn't.

No worries.

I forgot to say that some people are having issues with v13b of CIOS36 so I imagine that's why Larry has stuck with v12 for now. By all accounts it is very easy to change backwards and forwards between the versions though - installing one overwrites the other regardless of the version numbers.

There is also a more up to date version of the Homebrew channel than the one used here. It keeps asking if I want to upgrade when I load the channel but I haven't done so yet - I'm firmly of the 'Don't upgrade unless something doesn't work properly that you really need' brigade. From what I've read though, upgrading is fairly simple.

First, and foremost, since this train of thought isn't really following the guide of the thread it probably should have it's own topic...That being said two quick points I noticed...

This is true, but I think that ability only exists in rev?6? and up, if I'm not mistaken.

The HBC upgrade is safe to do, I've done it and had no new problems since doing so. However, I've not noticed any differences in its operation either. I believe they have a changelog available so you could see exactly what has changed in the new update if you were interested in investigating it further.
