i followed the guide here.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/773505

and i dont kno if it is my drive or not. but my comp can find the drive, but the wii cant.

i have a western digital 3.5" drive (40Gb) in a in a external usb adapter case. basically turns a internal comp hdd into a external usb drive.

my comp and any other comp can find it. but usb loader gx cannot.

i run usb loader gx and it just says cannot find external drive, gives 2 cios options (249 and 222 i think) and asks to retry for 30secs.

any ideas ?

i was thinking of formatting the drive with wbfs manager on the comp first maybe.

as usb loader wouldnt find drive. i hooked it up to comp, got the pc application to format and instal a few games. then re-tried hdd on wii and worked.

even though the app on the wii should have detected the hdd and asked to format it, i didnt for whateva reason. but all good now .

it seems like a bug on the GX, i tried two new HDD, which i always recommend to a friend. Both new HDD cannot be detected and formatted but if used a old HDD that i used in loader 1.1 works fine.

larry why does fat32 make a difference then ntsf? BTW is there anything out there that allows transfering files from a wbfs to wbfs drive? I have wbfs manager 3.0 and its not capable of that.

Im new, so bear with me!

I know wbfs manager 3.0.1 has this option.

The option is at the bottom left of the GUI. It says Drive-To-Drive

As for why FAT32 and not NTFS. Allot of the documentation I have read from the loaders say to do this. Plus I had a guy the other day that wanted me to hook him up. His flash drive was formated NTFS and I then flashed it to WBFS. It would work properly in Wbfs manager but the USB Loader would not recognize it when I hooked it up to the Wii. After reading that you should format it FAT first then WBFS I followed that recommendation and it then worked both with wbfs manager and USB Loader.

Since most portable HDD are in FAT32 but comes with extra software, do you need to have a clean HDD by reformating again as fat32? Which tool is the best?

I have only done a few myself and all I do is use windows and do a quick fat32 format on the drive. I also make sure it is set as a primary partiton in "disc managment" in windows.

I formatted to FAT32. And made it the primary partition but the wii is still not recognizing my Verbatim 160gb hdd (#96533). At first install the of the loader GX, it would recognize it sometimes but now it never does.
