ok guys, here's what ive got. i gave a 360 to a friend a few weeks ago (hitachi 59) and the next day it red ringed on him (typical) i got it back yesterday and saw that it was still under 3 yr warranty so i registered it and requested the coffin online. the console doesnt show any signs of pry marks on the tabs but the sticker looks bad so i have a 2nd silver sticker that looks pretty good(not perfect) but it has a black dot on the top. i also have the newer paper style sticker with a dot on it from a refurb ms sent me. i assume the black dot means its been repaired before but i cant be sure if the silver sticker has been repaired before(i mix and match alot of cases and parts-cant keep it all straight lol)im wondering, has anyone put the newer style paper warranty sticker on an older xbox and got it repaired? does the black dot mean its been repaired before? if they see the black dot and open to see no new heatsinks will they figure out its not the right sticker? any info that can be given would be great.

I recently sent an older console (with old heatsinks) to MS for repair. I used a spare silver warranty sticker with two black dots (on either side of the word Microsoft). Truthfully, I don't remember if the sticker came from a refurb or a retail console. However, using the black dotted seal was enough to get my console repaired.

Sooo, handle your business uturn and send that bad boy back with the black dotted seal!

It's safe to assume that the paper seal will only be found on refurbs, so the silver one is your best bet. :-)

Pretty interesting. Was kind of wondering the same thing. What stickers go with what boxes. I wouldn't think a marker on the sticker would matter. Heck, it's still under warranty and you might have to send it back.

interesting stuff guys, thanks for the responses. if only we knew more about the repair process. i read somewhere that they have 4 different areas at the return center- an area to inspect incoming consoles for tampering, an area to further inspect questionable seals, tabs, etc, an area that fixes the units, and an area that re-assembles them. but who really knows lol. im leaning towards using the dotted silver sticker. i only wish it was in perfect condition.

out of curiosity, did that sticker come from a different refurb or a newer console?

Haven't seen any refurbs but I know new consoles come with the paper warranty sticker. Just got a console new last friday and that was the sticker it had.

I flashed my 360 (Hitachi Drive) myself when it was about 11month old (i bought it second hand). when the machine was about 18month old i got RROD. you could see on my case that i had been into it (was my first attempt so wasnt the cleanest of entry), but my silver sticker was still intact. I sent it back to MS and within 2 weeks i had a new Mobo and a Benq installed. no questions asked.

I spoke to a friend of mine who owns a PC repair shop before i sent it back to see if he could repair it. And he simply said that all he does to every 360 that comes to him is send it back to MS. 95% of them they repair under warranty, and the ones they dont are repaired for less than a new machine.

I personally think that due to the inherrent failures of earlier 360s and the increased warranty to 3 years, they dont really question many that come back if its hardware failure they will repair it to try and restore faith.

but that is my opinion;

Don

Wonder about Nicks on the case? I did a poor job on my very first xbox and pryed in the back before I bought the xbox 360 tool. Shows a little bit of damage but not too bad. Sticker is intact. It's been replaced back when I first got it but not with the nicks. Just curious.

I'm not sure if all new retail consoles have a paper warranty sticker. The 9 refurbs I have received from MS since April of 2008 have had paper stickers (with a black dot on them).

If MS has indeed started using the paper seals on new retail consoles, I wonder if they have the black marker dot on them too.

I'd be really surprised if they start using the paper seal instead of the silver seal ... since the paper one is so much easier to remove.

They are all actually pretty easy to remove if you use the hair dryer trick. Comes right off. All new boxes I have had, have had the paper sticker. Older boxes carry the silver sticker. Wonder what would happen if you put a silver sticker on a newer box?

I think the reason they switched is the paper stickers have the word "Microsoft" printed across it that when lifted disappears. Also disappears when heated excessively(like with a hair dryer).

It was too easy to lift the silver stickers with them being intact and then put them back. Also, they were widely available online, so microsoft had to switch.

And you know, with all the 360's going back, I doubt they look for what sticker it has, they just look to see if its obviously been opened and push it down the line, lol.

Thats what I believe, I may be dead wrong, but then again...we all can.

I believe you're right on the money, jcalton! Makes absolutely perfect sense.

older consoles use the Silver sticker as previously stated. New ones paper sticker. IF you send it back and it comes back the paper sticker has the black dot showing they repaired or "seen it" so to say.

Also you can buy the paper stickers off ebay, and every sticker has the same exact #'s on the bottom. so if your worried buy a brand new one off ebay for like 10-15 bucks.

the paper stickers may be easier to remove but i heard that microsoft uses a uv light to see if it has been heated and lifted don't know if there is any truth to this but thats what i have heard and it would make sense to why they switched stickers

the UV light thing might be true, but ive sent several back in that i used a hair dryer to take off and got them replaced. on a side note, you dont even need to heat the new paper ones up to take them off. the last 3 or 4 i did i just used a really really sharp razor blade and took it off just enough to unclip the case.

Regardless if you send in a modded drive or not ... all drives are swapped out along with the motherboard during the repair process.

MS no longer sends back repaired consoles with a Samsung or Hitachi drive (even a BenQ is a pretty rare find in a refurb these days).

These are the days of the Lite-On!

aaah, thats cool then. ive got another spare hitachi that i can flash anyway. this is my first time with a lite-on and they sound so much quieter but my homemade probe/extractor is missing the serial to usb cable so i guess MS wins this little battle lol.

In order to spoof that Hitachi, you're gonna have to extract the new Lite-On's key.

The original key bin you have from before the console was repaired will no longer work with the new drive and mobo.

PM me if you need a little assistance with that. :-)
