i just got a xbox off a friend, he had it for a nice while modded and he had rrod fixed on it. it added his own paste and screws, so i got it off him a few weeks ago, day one when i got it, it got RROD, so he told me to open xbox, unplug fan and let it over heat to re seal paste, i did that and it worked for a few days then it happened again, and it told me to re seal paste again but to let it heat up longer this time, worked for a week or so and now i got RROD again. i was wondering if any of you could give me a meothod to fix it that will last longer then a week or so. Also, he somehow added a fan to the side of the xbox's heatsink inside, it joined the wires for it on the xboxs fan wires, and he somehow got the fans that were already in the xbox to run way faster, could this be causing a problem? thanks guys,

You got a POS 360. Probably won't be much fixing for it. Try the Hybrid RROD fix.

Take the entire box apart. Clean the old thermal compound of the dies. Put new thermal paste on (a dab will do ya). Clean thermal paste off the heat sinks (might take a while). Then follow llama.com tutorial on what length/type of screws and washers to use.

If it has been done already and isnt working anymore you should make sure it was done correctly.
Clean all the thermal compound off and apply new stuff. Be sure to not use too much, there should only be enough to cover the dies. That means literally paper thin. And make sure that everything is put together correctly.
You should have 12mm screws that pass through the chassis but you need to expand the existing holes. If this is already done make sure there are 4 1mm washers between the chassis and the mobo. Once the mobo is fitted back in put 2 washers around the screws so that you dont put too much pressure on the dies. Then when fitting the heat sinks back on be sure to turn all the screws evenly so you dont mess up the threads or unevenly distribute pressure on the dies.
Again all of this with visual aids can be found at llama.com. Its not a joke web address, when you go there look for the X-Clamp replacement tutorial. Ive fixed dozens of 360's with all sorts of problems and llama's tutorial is one of the best to fix the generic 3rrod problem.

Get Artic Silver 5 only, but Paste isn't going to fix your problem.

If there is a Best Buy near you pick up some of their Dynex brand thermal compound. Its 99.5% pure and its what I use for all my computers and 360's. Just remember to take special care when cleaning off the old compound. Depending on how old the compound is it could take about an hour to get it all perfectly clean.

I had same issue with ist generation 360 which I bought over 2 years ago.......RROD, did paste, x-clamp, but eventually it will come back, 2nd time around it's usually the GPU which gives out if rrod after doing x-clamp & paste, it you have 16.2V version, toss it out, it will keep doing rrod...........over heating is not the solution & it will eventually kill you components..........I had same issue......couple of monmths ago I got arcade version 12.6V, & it runns for over 5-6 hours & cold as ice, very normal & don't feel any heat at all..this is how is suppose to be.
