I have this for gamecube and want to play it on my wii but it wont load

i get to the menu where i can choose which game i want to play but when i choose, right before the screen that says reading the game disc, it gives me a disc read error

I just tried this and it works for me.

That is through the disc channel (original disc)
I do get an error when I use the gamecube backup launcher.

Edit: I'm not sure if you are using the backup launcher or not but the Gamecube Backup Launcher Compatibility List has this to say about it:
"Xi - use Start for Rebooter. Works perfectly, other options freeze at game selection."

Well that's pretty strange.

All I can think of is that something is wrong with the disc (scratches, smudges)

Do other Gamecube games work?

yes other games work fine

this game works fine on my gamecube by the way

That makes it even stranger. I'm not sure what to tell you. In my experience the Wii has been better at reading Gamecube games than the Gamecube.
