I did a check on a buds drive and it says 25% chance chips covered in black glue, does this mean the whole board is covered or just the chip? and does it effect modding it in anyway.

Maybe buy a new drive? then remove the epoxy anyway. when its removed then soldering it? don't recommend epoxy removal and then a clip. remove the epoxy and solder. or just get a premodded drive.

Oh
:/

Well it could have been worse, it could have been Eagles or Cowboys. I don't mind the Giants.

But yeah, I guess I should be done with the off topic-ing for now.

:/ :/ :/ :/ :/ :/(that's how I feel by the way)

The epoxy is easy to remove with paint stripper. Just apply a small amount, wait a couple of minutes, and then lightly scrape. It will take a number of applications but if you are careful it is a fairly easy and safe process (1-3 hours). Just make sure that once you are close to reaching the board or a component, that you use something that will not scratch the board. Toothpicks are a good choice. Also, do not try and remove too much material at once or you may rip one of the very small components off of the board. It is better to take your time and work in a safe fashion. Once the epoxy has been removed, clean the area(s) with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton-tipped applicator (a Que-Tip). I know that paint stripper containing methylene chloride works well. While you could completely clean the board and use a clip, simply soldering will be easier.

thanks, might be the way to go. Just wanted some clarification of the glue covered chip. was not sure if it was the whole board that was covered in epoxy or just the chip. Guess there is only one way to find ot, was just hoping it was not the whole baord. Its a new wii and would hate to void the waranty if I cannot get the chip installed .

Don't attempt to move it... I'm surprised the guy above recommended it. I work in the transaction security business and you attempting to remove that is going to be ALLLLOOOOTTTTT of work.. and I've witnessed in person that most people end up scrapping off actual connections while in the process.. Don't ruin a good wii. Do what I had a friend of mine do, either swap out the drives, or have him trade his NEW wii for an older wii. Alot of people don't mod, so its easy to find someone to trade their system for a brand new wii..

If you want to mod your wii why not save yourself all the hassle and buy a flat mod or similar that doesnt connect directly to the chip?

I disagree. My friend removed the black epoxy in 15 min. You have to have experience with this sort of thing as well as the right tools. A heat gun or a high power hair dryer is required.

Using paint stripper is very easy and safe. Simply make sure that the paint stripper does not touch the plastic flex cable connector. If you manage to pry off a component, then you deserve to destroy your board because you have the patience and restraint of a 4 year old. The paint stripper method can easily be completed within three hours by someone who has never performed the operation before. With experience, one to two hours should be easily achievable. This method is also much safer than the heat gun or soldering iron approaches which do have a higher chance of damaging the drive's board (although they are faster).

Here is a lengthy thread from another site that proves that even highly experienced modders are switching to this method (http://wiinewz.com/forums/wiikey-2/77900-wiinewz-official-wii-epoxy-removal-guide.html).

Theres absolutely no issue with you disagreeing, but seriously, give me a break.. You're asking someone who may not have alot of modding experience to take a heat gun/soldering iron to heat up glue thats making SECURE contact with vital connections and pins that are very easy to break... Your logic is great if you're a truely experienced modder. I've been doing modding since the PS1 and I won't even go about removing the epoxy. He could accidently heat up something enough that it removes chips, soldering points, or even enough to break the legs on the controller chip. Nintendo put the stuff there for a reason, to prevent us from modding wii's, think about it, they upped the risk of removing the stuff.

I'm glad the OP decided to go a different route and save some time and possibly the risk of losing his wii. He decided on a different method thats going to give him the same outcome minus the risk of messing up the board.

@tex176

OK, the point being is that it CAN be done.

I have 25+ years experience as an electronics technician and I took my Wii to a professional modder (it was a cut pins Wii). Not because I coudn't do it, but I'm getting a little older and didn't have the magnifiying glass necessary to do the dremel work and soldering (also because I'm old and my eyesight is going).

I considered it a "one off" and therefore took it to someone qualified.

My "gut" reaction would be to tell TC to "take it to a pro", but it appears that he wants to do it himself.

BTW, my friend that did the epoxy removal in 15 min. did it on his first attempt, but he is an experienced technician. HOWEVER, as I said in my post, "You have to have experience with this sort of thing as well as the right tools."

We agree to disagree.
