UK pirates are hurting economy, says SABIP

article published on 29 May, 2009

According to the The Strategic Advisory Board for Intellectual Property (SABIP), about 7 million UK citizens pirate music, games, movies and software each year, costing the economy at least $12 billion pounds. On any given weekday, over 1.3 million people can be found using one of many file-sharing networks, adds the board. Yet they still harp on about "omg piwates are making us lose money"

Newsflash, you don't lose anything, because they would never buy it in the first place.

we the common people would never see that money they rant on about anyway. we are not in a recession we are in a dominance the rich get richer the poor are getting poorer by the second. if everybody even CEO all earned 45 dollars an hour there would be no recession as there would be no dominance there would be no poor there would be no rich.

Money trickles down the top it always has, by the time it reaches the men and woman that keep the fat cats fat just so they can stay alive with basic necessity there is nothing left.

This makes me think about those stupid commercials before movies,"you wouldn't steal a car would you." Poor microsoft, poor sony, poor rich movie stars and singers. They say that piracy hurts the smaller people on those things. Maybe if the stars didn't make ungodly figures then they could afford to keep those people.

Well when it comes to the alphabet soup organizations of the media groups and those with their hands in everyone else's pocket but their own, a comedian has stated it better than anyone else...

You can't argue with dumb!

That is a very true, but we would have some lazy azz 45 dollar makers that still do as little as possible(execs etc).

You govt people need to realize one thing, the money was never going to them anyway. We download just to pass free time during the days.

If they really did a proper job, they would have found the reverse. Piracy reduces the harmful effects of price gouging. Pirates add to the echonomy buying storage for their ill gotten goodies.

The movie industry survives because of the after market sales which are proped up by movie rentals which are proped up by pirates.

Ughh...more horse ^%#$. They have no idea how many "pirates" actually purchase after they've sampled. Going with an absurdly high number is self-serving. If the economy really does lose $12 billion pounds a year, would it even function? According to some sources I've read, the US has the least amount of piracy, yet our economy is the only one in the crapper.

No, most of the world's echonomy is in the crapper and it is going to get a lot worse. I am expecting violance to break out over it. I do not know if it will be war or revolution. What I can say it it will not be pretty. The worlds richest countries have been in deficent spending for decades. The US has started to earn AA instead of AAA ratings. When it grows broke all the countries that were feeding off its fat will have no income. No one will be happy. many will be out of work.

Think again Lothros. When I left the service during NAM era POLICE ACTION, NOT WAR there were no jobs for a working stiff. You were DIRT if you were a Vet. Here in the US Bush, Cheney used the Iraq attack to raise their oil profits and GUESS WHAT- no jobs again. By the way, love the Youtube link to PIRACY, plazma247. Craftyzan, your picture reminds me of milkcows on the farm. They'd do a snort like that after sniffing another cow's butt. Hard to forget.

Plasma 247; Thanks for the insert info, will try your suggestion. And ZippyDSM you got the right idea. Although that picture is from a Brit site. The regular guys pirate to have enough money to get by. Everytime we head to the supermarket the prices on lots of items edge up a bit. And I think it's the retailer mostly. Same with petrol. Although in the U.S. the price of a Chrysler or GM vehicle may decrease soon and you'll probably forget dealer warranty on those vehicles.

Maybe in 5 years prices on vehicles will come down to proper mass consumer items but I doubt it the us car industry can not make a small/cheap and effeicnt car and even if they did 30-50% of the price would be for crash testing, all we need is better fuel system safety and roll bars/reinforced cabs if worse comes to worse put a 10% industry tax(money would go back into) on it and remove the added cost of crash testing from the product that is if crash testing adds 5-10K onto a vehicles price.

There is just so much waste in the US car industry its not even funny, its a good thing they are closing dealers and getting rid of car lines we have to many of them and to many new cars sitting doing nothing.
