Hey everyone, I was reading everything on the net pertaining to my semi bricked Wii that can't access the system menu, and I have some questions about it.

First, let me tell you about my semi bricked Wii: I have no idea how I semi bricked it since I never install updates off of PAL or JAP games, but it happened! I have Homebrew and a WiiKey. The internet connection doesn't work on it, since the settings are wrong...

I've read that there are some fixes to this, the first one being this disc you can download and it will update your Wii (wii-system-menu-update-USA-v289-repad.iso). Well, I tried it and it just goes to a black screen saying there was an error and I should eject the disc. Tried burning many different ways with different burners and discs and programs, but the same results always. I also saw that the size of the file doesn't fill the entire DVD... is this why it's not working? Should it be the full size of a DVD?

I thought then that I had to downgrade my Wii. This part really confuses me! What homebrew wads or apps do I need to do this? Will it work? I heard some people have had success by changing the region of their Wii, then changing settings of the internet connection, then changing back, and doing the downgrade... anyone know about this?

Lastly I heard that the new games with updates on them, like Animal Crossing, should update my system. I haven't tried this yet, and I'm really hoping this will work.

I know there's a million threads about this topic, and most people must be getting really tired of answering these noob questions, but if someone wouldn't mind lending a helping hand, I would appreciate it a lot!

So, what method works best? What homebrew wads or apps do I need for a downgrade? Is a downgrade even needed? Anyone have any advice at all?

THANK YOU anyone who helps!

Try updating the Wii with an NTSC(U) version of Punch Out (I think it has 4.0 on it and should unbrick the settings if you semi-bricked it with 3.4 firmware or below).

I tried Animal Crossing and Punch Out and both played without needing the update, which makes me think I have 3.4 on there. Is there any other way to get it unbricked? I have to do it soon, since I'm leaving to Japan and am giving my Wii to someone with a fullscreen TV, while I have the Wii set to widescreen... Help please?

Punch Out should have 4.0 on it.

Make sure your not brick blocking the ISO's.

Also use the config disc for the Wiikey and make sure you have block updates disabled for the Wiikey settings. If you have it set to block game updates then you will not get prompted for an update.

Just wanted to say, Punch Out required an update, I did it and the system said it was 3.4. So maybe not all versions of the game have the 4.0 firmware.

I'm incredibly new to all this and used larry's guide just last night (thanks btw works like a charm).

I just downloaded a Punch Out ISO off the net, deleted it right after cause I don't own the game of course. Maybe the ISO I downloaded had the update removed? I'm going to try a retail copy, and check my Wiikey settings, and get back to you guys. Thanks a lot.

I can't say for sure since I've been on 4.0 for some time now but according to here: http://wum.talevas.com/?page=dev
Punch Out has 3.4 and there isn't any game yet with 4.0

I looked into this and its correct. Punch out only carries the an updated CIOS to play the game not an actual 4.0 update. I think alot of people including me were confused about this.

Tried an original copy, no update, checked my wiikey settings, updates not blocked. So can anyone give me another way to fix the semi-brick? Or do I have to just wait? Maybe the downgrade then upgrade would work? If so, can someone please explain it in a little more deatil? And is it possible to do with my internet connection on the Wii not working?

You can always try this thread HERE. Have no idea if it works or how safe it is but this user seemed to have had success.

Thanks for the tips. What if I go into anyregion changer, and both regions say USA/NTSC? Does that mean they're already both USA and I can't change them? Or should I just save it from there?

Ok, I'm a little worried now, it says that my installed region is " . " no number or letter! What does this mean? I thought that the only region I could have switched it to by mistake is Europe, so I tried to switch it, but it said there was an error and just quit out of the anyregion changer! Anyone have ideas? I'm getting really worried

I edited my last message because that probably will not work. I don't want you to end up with a full brick.

But I did find something that actually may work for you.

Go HERE and follow the Offline Downgrade/Upgrade section of the guide (since your settings are gone and no Internet access this part of the guide should work since your downloading the files to your PC and transferring them to the SD Card).

I would update to 4.0U since most everything will work with it. After running prepare.bat choose 417 for 4.0U files to be downloaded.

Also I would install Preloader and go into the hacks settings and enable block game system updates (to avoid a semi-brick).

Preloader is also a safeguard in case of a brick. If your system will not boot you can press reset while booting the Wii and it will launch into Preloader so you can run aplications like HBC or other .dol files.

Thanks for all the info and help guys, but I have to go to Japan now. So hopefully this thread helps others out there. I told the person that I'm letting borrow it to just get a new game when it comes out and update with it.
