Hi everyone. I searched for the answer to this question and couldn't find anything so I decided to post and ask. Sorry if it is posted somewhere but I must have missed it.
I noticed in the readme for the ix16 - 0800, it states "This firmware is =NOT FOR USE IN A CONSOLE= and is provided with the intended use of being in a dedicated "ripping" drive". I think I've seen plenty of posts about how this firmware will allow you to rip and to play games successfully without problems. I was wondering if any of you are using the firmware for gaming and for ripping even though it says it is for dedicated ripping. If so, does it work without any problems? Is there a reason that they put that statement in the text file?
Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
I just looked at the readme that came with the LiteOn firmware, and I didn't see anything that said that. It said that it had 0800 Mode, that's all I saw about the 0800 Mode. Anyways, I've used it in 0800 Mode, but I didn't have the new XBC installed. But ya it didn't seem to have any problems. Just to get the drive in Vendor Mode so that it will show up in Windows, is you have to power on, eject, power off, push tray half way, then power on. You need to do that when the system is booting up.
There are currently two (2) versions of the ixtreme 1.6 firmware - one for gaming and ripping / and the latest is for the sole purpose of ripping games (0800 mode ONLY).
The original 1.6 was released on 5-15-09 (console gaming and 0800 ripping)
The 0080 only 1.6 was released on 5-29-09 (dedicated 0800 ripping / NOT FOR GAMING)
((( just clarifying the above for those that still aren't aware of the difference )))
I have flashed a spare BenQ with the new 0800 firmware and it also states in Jungle Flasher NOT to use it in your console. There must be a very good reason why the warnings exist.
Also, when using the new 0800 firmware you do not need to input your console drive key since its to be used as a dedicated ripping drive connected to your PC only. (Simply put, it converts your drive into a Kreon-like PC DVD drive - which you can not pop into a 360 console).
It's logical to believe that with the warnings in the firmware's text file and Jungle Flasher, it isn't safe for console gaming. There may be small things missing in the new 0800 firmware enabling it to become a straight ripping drive without having to do half-tray tricks like with the original 1.6.
Quote:This means:
a. Does not need your DVD key,
b. Does not need spoofing as another drive,
c. Does not need to use the tray half open and
d. Does not need to use the activate.iso to use this firmware on the pc.
I get it now. It makes perfect sense. I thought that the firmware released a few days ago was just an update to the one release on the 15th. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

but can we input our drive key if we wanted to? so that if we needed a replacement drive we would have one ready.

If you wanted a "standby" that you will primarily use for ripping, just flash with the full iXtreme 1.6 firmware, not the 0800 release!!
If you want to use the 0800 only firmware (for ease of ripping etc) but still want a standby you can't, just create a a firmware file with your key and save on your PC, then just flash when you need to use it to play games.
ohh, i see what you mean. It would be dumb to input the drive key to the 0800 firmware because if I ever wanted to use it to play games I would have to flash it with the regular 1.6 and I could input the drive key during that process.
Thanks :)
