I just used larrylje's guide for the 4.0 softmod. Works well, thanks again larrylje!
I'm curious though, is there a way to prevent my kid from getting a new game, tossing it in the drive and updating the system and ruining the mod or potentially bricking the wii?

Everytime you get an iso, patch it with wii brick blocker. It patches the update in the iso. As for if you buy a game you can get some apps that stop the update I believe but i dont know much about that. Someone else might know of a specific app.

have bootmii installed, and copy the NAND. make sure to save the NAND everywhere; email, computer, external.
then use usb loader to run the games.

I have bootmii installed as well and when I click to load it, it shows a screen with 4 icons on it and just sits there froze. Maybe I'm doing something wrong there.
Whats the NAND? (sorry, I'm super new to this scene).

it's not frozen; the wiimote is inoperable. you either need a gamecube controller or use the power/reset buttons to navigate.
NAND is a 1:1 copy of your wii. in any event that a semi/full brick happens, you can use bootmii to restore it; that's the main purpose of bootmii.
NEVER use another NAND copy, but your own.

Will USB loader install a game that has a firmware update on it?
If so, couldn't I take my kids new game, install it to my hdd with USB loader, and just play it like that, without fearing a firmware change messing up the softmod?

I just thought of what I wrote there and it doesnt make any sense, sorry.
I guess I just looking for a way that my kid can shove new games in the wii without me freaking out that he's going to brick it. Is there an easy way for me to make it so?

Yes. Monitor his use of the Wii. Know which games have updates and which don't.
My son is 7 and he's not allowed near the Wii unless I'm in the room.
This is not parenting advice, as it is the same restriction I put on my idiot ex-wife.

bricks are caused by out of region games. even if the game matches your region, and it asks to update, it's safe, UNLESS it's a firmware update that is new. but 4.0 is the latest, so the updates are ones to run the game.
have bootmii installed as boot2, and you're safe.

Alright, thanks guys!!
As for the boy not going near the Wii when I'm not around, thats the rule but you guys know kids.
I wasn't aware of the region issue. Like I said, I'm new to the Wii mod scene, its been 24 hours now. Last console I did anything with was a Dreamcast, I'm much too old school for these new gen games, but Punchout pulled me in so I figured I'd tinker.
Anyways, thanks again to you guys and everyone else on the forum, this place has always been a wealth of knowledge for me.
