I've been using a plextor convertx to convert old family VHS to AVI. It's bundled with InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2.0. I recorded some files years ago that have been sitting on my drive which I intended to burn to DVD so they're MPEG2. More recently, I recorded the rest of the tapes using DivXAVI and the format is more suitible to my needs.
Using GSpot, i compared the codec's of each.
Format I want:
Video - DX50: DivX 5.x/6.x
Audio - 0x0050 MPEG-1 Layer 2
Files I have and format I don't want:
Video - MPEG2: MPEG-2 Audio - MPEG-1 Layer 2
I'm having a horrible time trying to change the format. VirtualDUB is giving me the "invalid pack at position 3" error message so I tried VirtualDUBMOD. MOD opens the file, I can't seem to find the specific codec or codec settings to change it do. I had some luck using the Mobile codec, but the video freezes after about 20 seconds (audio is fine). If anyone had any suggestions or ideas I'm open to any. Thanks in advance!

The plugin did help me open it in normal virtual dub by adding it, however I had been able open it in the VirtualDUB MOD which appears to pretty much be the same thing, except packaged with the MPEG2 plugin. I already have DivX installed on my system
Both files open and play fine on the PC. I just cant seem to find how to reencode the MPEGs using the same specific codecs at the same bitrates as the AVI files.

I don't think I'm clearly expressing myself. My understanding is that Plextor Convertx is hardware based so it does all the processing onboard. The format that device uses appears close to the DivX Mobile or qMobile as far as compression so that would be fine, if the video wouldn't stop playing after about 20 or 30 seconds. I'll post some screenshots when I get home tonight as that may better help me make my point, as well as perhaps a sample clip.

The codec, appears to me, is in the firmware of the device and is the one I have highlighted in the below image. I was able to find the actual codec info with G-Spot, but I'm trying to figure out how to replicate those exact settings with current DivX options. The MPEGs I have now I believe I recorded with "the MPEG4HighQuality" setting.
Yeah I had tried that one, as well as the qMobile one, and that is where it gave me playback issues where the video froze after 20s of playback (as well as trying to move the progress bar ahead) but the audio was consistent. I attempted to change the bit rate of the mobile profile but had no luck in doing so as VDub wont reencode it.
Worst case scenario if I HAVE to have them in that format I can always burn to a DVD and reimport from the dvd player via analog connections. I'll poke aorund a little more, even if I can get them successfully imported with .divx then I could possibly live with that. I'm open to any other suggestions anyone would have.
Well, I stumbled across DivX All in One Fix and that fixed the MPEG1 audio issue I had with converting to .divx format. I greatly appreciate all the help and effort you put in trying to help. Thanks!
