I got a game (red faction) and knocked the xbox over when playing the disk has white lines on it and the xbox crashes when i try and play it. I sent the game back but i want to know what makes the white lines and how it affects the game.

I'd say that it was just the disc getting scratched, I don't know specifically what it is inside the DVD drive that causes the scratches though, sorry.

Moving the 360 from vertical to horizontal position while a disc is spinning will cause that. That is why it is recommended to run your 360 in the horizontal position. Plus gravity plays hell on your heatsinks (in the vertical position) and can be a problem in the future.

Yeap, you shouldn't have your box in vertical position.
