I am on 3.4u and I have Homebrew Channel installed. How do I get Punch Out to work without messing anything up?

I haven't tried anything yet. Just put the disc in and it says I need a system update but I don't really want to do that.

Compatibility with newer games and you can move your WADs and launch from the SD cards. Just do a regular update from nintendo.

Just look a the official info on that update.
If you want to stay on 3.4U just follow this guide and Punch Out will work fine. I was in the same dilemma but I did not wanted to update to 4 so I followed the guide here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/773505
I did the first two steps but I never upgraded to 4 and now I can play Punch Out with no error #002 or black screen.
By the way, I'm still at 3.4 firmware.

In a nut shell, install HBC, WiiGator Gamma and cIOS36_rev7 and you are good to go!

I'm very new to this and a little confused. Some people say just update through Nintendo as usual and some say to do all these other steps (install IOS60 etc.)... what's the difference??

The guides on this forum are a mess. Just follow this http://wiiguide.co.cc/

They have all the files and steps in one location.

Wow that is a much easier guide to follow than anything else I have found here. One question. I have a mod chip in my wii... I also need to softmod? Right now I burn iso files to disc and they work fine. Only Punch-out doesn't work. It says I need the system update. I already have Homebrew Channel installed. Should I still proceed to use that guide?

"softmoding" just means you install software on your wii not approved by Nintendo. The modchip will allow you to run game back ups that you have burned yourself. They are separate modifications that can be used independently to do certain "unapproved" functions with your wii. You can achieve the same results of launching game backup DVD's by purely "softmoding" and installing a backup launcher. By installing other softmods, you can launch backups from an external drive USB drive or from an SD card. By installing the homebrew channel, you can launch user generated code easily from your SD slot.

Read up some more on this forum and wiinewz.com and everything will make a lot more sene.

Things are starting to become clearer now thanks to you. I'm still a little confused as to why, since I have the modchip, I can't just update to 4.0 the normal way and play the Punch Out disc I have burned myself.

Do I only need to do all this softmodding if I want my Wii to do other stuff like Homebrew? Or is it, because I have the modchip, that I can't update the normal way. Thanks for your help. I apologize if these are dumb questions but I have read a bunch of stuff and it's only just confusing me more.

You can update to 4.0 normally since you have a modchip if you are not interested in running certain "softmods". You will still be able to play your burned backups. If you want your "softmods" to all work correctly, you'll have to follow these guides.

Ok got it. Update normally and my back up games will work but any Homebrew Applications I have may not work right?

In the guide it says it will install the Homebrew Channel. If I already have that installed will it mess things up?

Nope, it just installs over it. That is what it did for me.

Ok this is the final question I promise. If I go ahead and update to 4.0 normally can I still go and do the softmods later if I want to use them?? If I'm understanding things correctly then the answer is yes, just want to be sure.

No.....but maybe. At this point if you don't install something called a "cios" before you update to 4.0, you won't be able to do it later and you won't be able to do certain things that I won't get into here. There are guides talking about ways around this, but it seems to be hit and miss with lots of people reporting that the steps fail. The guide I provided shows steps to take if you are already at 4.0 but I haven't followed them myself.

But it is much easier if you are pre 4.0, to install the cios, and then update.

OK I lied -- couple more questions...

I followed the guide you provided and everything worked perfectly. Punch Out is now playing fine.

A couple other questions...

1. I'm assuming I can play the game either from the Backup Launcher or the Disc Channel right? It doesn't make a difference right?

2. Does all this mean I wasted $ getting a chip put in my wii?

3. In the Homebrew Channel I am getting a message saying an update v 1.0.3 is available (I am currently on 1.0.1) should I install the update?

Like I said I'm new to this so any help is appreciated.

Oh and now that I'm done all this I'm still on 3.4u ... should I now update normally to 4.0 or just leave it?

1. yes

2. It is unlikely that Nintendo will be able to disable your modchip. Softmod on the other hand can (more) easily be defeated in later updates. So I wouldn't consider it a "waste", but you could have gone without it for the time being.

Life insurance is a waste of money until your thumb gets cut off.

3. yes

4ish. If all your games play, there is no reason to update.
