The flash looks good. What message are you getting when you put in a game? Open Tray or Dirty Disc Error?

Also will it read originals?

unrecognized disc. this disc is unreadable. 1. clean the disc blah blah blah.
it spins up with trouble and will autoload and give me that. commercial games give me no trouble at all.
and just to satisfy my own curiosity (and perhaps for future upgrades) what method do i use to read firmware in JF for a flashed samsung?

The Samsung Unlock is used on Stock firmware, and possibly ix1.4 or lower (Can't remember right now about ix1.4 or lower). There are a couple of ways to get into vendor mode. I personally prefer sending the Intro, then power cycling the drive. Then once in vendor mode, you can read the firmware.

Now with the disc unreadable problem. It could be the laser isn't strong enough to read through the dye of the backup so you might need to adjust the laser strength with a POT Calibration. Easy to do with a multimeter. Or the disc could be a bad burn.

This thread pretty much had the same issue and was resolved by a POT calibration. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/772176

i am familiar with the methods of getting into vendor mode but i once i do i receive invalid status 0x50... getting into vendor isnt a problem it doesnt seem to want to read the firmware back. thank you for the tip on the POT calibration. the disc works in other flashed consoles.

I'm not too sure so please don't hold this against me. But i think i read somewhere that when your dvd key is "
DVD key found @ 0x40EC key is 77777777777777777777777777777777 " then you will run into that problem. Have a look at the ixtreme forums or jungle flasher for help. I think i read about it there.
