Hi all
I've done the x-clamp fix and it let me boot up just fine and allow 5-10 minutes of game play where it then freezes. After reboot it then displays the 3 rrod. If I leave it for about 10-15 minutes the same thing happens again.......it boots fine game play for about 5-10 min then 3 rrod.
My x-clamp fix contained:-
8 x Machine Screws
8 x Spring Washers
8 x Nylon Washers
8 x Metal Washers
I used the arctic silver 5 thermal paste.
Any idea/help on solving this problem?
Thanks
EDIT erro code 0102
I have just found this link what should I do?

try tweaking the screws a little tighter, then over heat by disconnecting the fan untill two red lights. try it a couple of times. it may work

Hi i really don't think you should try and overheat it, that often causes more damages in the long run than good. I know from experience! Rather keep trying to adjust your screws. Make sure your layer of thermal paste is paper thin on the processor. Also with the screws i like to use cheese head screws. When i screw in the heatsink i first counterscrew till i hear a click and then i carry on till the line is flat and i do this for all the screws, so they're all flat. Then i screw them in diagonally each 1 turn at a time, keeping the line flat. I find it also helps to number the holes with a marker so you don't turn any too many times. Doing it this way helps keep the heatsink perfectly flat. If it still doesn't work try loosening a little at a time and keep testing. Remember to turn it on twice each time you test. Best of luck

I have fixed many boxes and this one is impossible without a reflow. It is a bad soder joint.

Okay so I have finally cleaned all the paste off and removed both of the heat sinks.
What areas do I need to face the heat gun on the motherboard? and for how long? the gun has 4 heat stages 1 hot - 4 hottest.

You are probably going to need to wrap your motherboard in some material to protect against heat. That heat gun is going to generate a lot of heat all over and it could possibly pop some capacitors.

Have fun frying your board with a heatgun. That is NOT a reflow...

ok here is my take,,,this what iv done and 25 xboxs later everybodys happy,,,i dont use screws for the cpu,,its not the problem,,i only use screws for the gpu,,after puting on the paste i x clamp the cpu heat sink,,then i screw in the gpu tight ,,not to tight,,but tight into the motherboard,,then yes her we go,,i use a black and decker heat gun and point it onto the gpu heatsink for about 1 min,,then turn the board around and heat the underside not kepping it to one spot but in a circular motion and 10 seconds right under the gpu,,turn it around and blast the gpu heatsink for about 30 seconds,,pointing it right on it,,let it cool for 1/2 hour,,losen the screws until you get the green lights,,iv have dne 25 boxes like this and one i did 7months ago,,and it still going strong,,and this guy is a heavy gamer,,,thats just my take,,cheers

thats pretty much what i do but like i said in my other post put the gpu heat sink back on tight to the board and heat it up that way,,because when the gpu is tight to the board and you heat it up it will make a better connection back to the board,,thats what i find,,just make sure you dont keep the heat on to long,,cheers

Well this method may have not worked for you but it has certainly worked great for me. The x360 still remains working and no longer has the 0102 error. Are you sure you did exactly as Coorva stated. My heat gun is a black & decker but I dont think it really matters what brand of heat gun you use.
Cheers

This worked for me but with a variation.
I first got three red lights, then after the towel trick it worked again for about 6mths, then one red light.
It appeared it was the gpu as after overheating it again it would work, but only for a day or so. It would get a weird graphical glitch, forcing me to turn it off, and the next time it was powered on it would have the one red light.
I opened it up, removed the xclamps and replaced them with M5 screws 11mm in length with a washer on each screw. On the gpu heatsink I put the washers between the heatsink and the gpu and with the cpu I put the washers on the underside of the board. All screws had a nut on the underside of the board for tensioning.
I also cleaned the gpu and cpu and applied thermal paste (quite a bit of paste of actually) and drilled clearance holes in the metal case for the screws to poke through.
It worked for a day then one red light again. It's been sitting around for about 2mths before I came across this thread.
I did what was suggested re coorva with the heat gun, although I did something kinda funny and used a fan heater (I don't own a heat gun or a hair dryer). The heater is in the shape of a millenium falcon so it was easy to direct the heat to where coorva specified.
After putting it back together and turning it on I got back the green lights but the fans were going ballistic, the box sounded like a cessna taking off.
After a little googling it seemed tightening the screws was the way to go, so after about 3 tries of gradually tightening the screws (so the heatsinks were closer to the chips), the fans started behaving normally and I now have a 360 that works like a charm.
Your post was my missing link coorva, thanks heaps mate.
Just writing all this for the AD database.
