Transfer 360 dvd drive to new console

I have a modded 360 that is now completely destroyed cause I tried to open it up and now there's no power going to the DVD I think because it won't open up and what not. Oh and its got the three red rings to boot. But even before when I had the three red rings the light on the power adapter would turn yellow ... now it first flashes red and then stays orange like the system was off but there's three red lights on the console.

OK all that was the back story - if anyone has any ideas bout that that would be great too. But my real question is :
I have a new console - just the console and if I transfer the DVD unit into the new one - will I be able to play backups on it - will the flashed drive work on the new one?
