Since i am very new to the wii modding scene i wanted to hear from the veterans about what are some of the must have apps through HBC for the Wii. I have HBC, USBLoader, Backup Channel, Bootmii and MPlayer CE. I would like to dive into the emulators since im at least familiar with them(have some for PC use).

Also, on my PC i have some programs to help make my backups run smooth without causing problems on my wii. I have an IOS Patcher to patch all games to IOS249. I have an Update Patcher to get around that issue. I also have a region converter called Wiizle Diizle Shiizle. The region converter works as far as i know(only used it once to no avail... i still had to force NTSC) but then again i am so new i dont know if i left something out.

So what should my next move be??? What are the "must haves?"

The question your are asking depends on what you would like to do with your wii and i wouldn't say there are any real "must haves" just applications you would find useful etc for yourself.

You can find all the latest HomeBrew applications and information on what each application does here:

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_applications

As for emulators, you can find torrents online that are in gamecube format that you can play through your wii using a gamecube controller.

I think this is easier if you have many favourite games on the retro platforms such as the SNES, N64 or even Sega Mega Drive etc that have thousands of roms on a single DVD

If its just a couple of retro games you would like to play then you can install an emulator on the wii with a handful of roms instead if you would rather do that :)

I think I would like to try your suggestion karlroby about finding roms in gamecube format. What would be a good search criteria? Where can i go to learn more about roms in Gamecube format? I have tried somewhat and i didnt find anything too helpful.

Anybody else try this method of playing roms?

You can find these rom discs in Gamecube format on the most popular bit torrent sites, unfortunatelty i cant add links to some as its against the forum rules and the thread will get deleted mate

Also this is a popular way of playing them but requires a gamecube congtroller to play the roms and also a gamecube memory card to be able to save the game :)

ok thats fine. what format am i looking for? will they be .iso or .gcn or something else? I know i can get a hold of a GC controller and memory card easily so thats no concern for me. When i find a rom disk will i put it in the wii just like a normal game? Also, do i need a specific application to launch the roms?

For SNES, you should get Snes9x GX. It loads right from homebrew channel, can read roms right off of your SD card (Or DVD if you prefer), can save state, SRAM (to your SD Card so no need for GC memory), video HQ filter, and best of all you can use wiimote, classic controller or gamecube controller to play. It's 100% speed as well.

Also, check out wiibrew.org for all your homebrew needs, you might find something you like!

The games will be in ISO format (inside a rar archive maybe) and you can simply burn them to dvd just like a wii game. As your wii is softmodded you will need the gamecube backup launcher (or something similar) to be able to play gamecube backups :)

ok so let me make sure i have this right.

I find a large collection of roms for all types of gaming systems in .iso format, burn them to a dvd, get a gamecube backup launcher application and play the retro titles through the GC backup launcher?

sounds simple enough unless i missed something...

Yeah thats right, the 2 roms discs in gamecube format i have downloaded (each ISO with houndreds if not thousands of games on it) were for the retro Nintendo consoles such as NES, SNES, Gameboy etc etc. if you are after a particular game, for example dreams for the sega saturn then it would be better to play them through the wii such as brucedlx said but if you would like many different ones then its better in my opinion to do it this way as it saves a lot of messing about.

The rom discs i downloaded in gamecube format were from the popular epalwii and wiisos group that upload the wii games etc :)

all i can say is give it a try, if you feel its not for you then you have the other option of inidividually installing roms and an emulator on the wii for the small amount of games you enjoy playing etc :)

karlrboy is talking about a specific ISO that someone made pre-configured. It's really a 4.7gb gamecube ISO that you put in the wii and play through gamecube mode. It's not REALLY meant for wii. You'll have to find that specific ISO because it will be difficult to make yourself.

oh boy and i thought it was going to be easy. if push comes to shove ill just get the emulator apps and figure out how to work those instead of taking the "fast track" with a rom loaded ISO.

I dont see the problem with this method as the wii is backwards compatible with gamecube games and the quality of the roms is that of like the original.

The ISO's are pre made so all you have to do is extract them if they are in a winrar archive burn to dvd stick in the wii and play with a gamecube controller and also have the gamecube backup launcher installed thats it.

It seems an easier way of doing it if you liked many of the snes roms etc and saves you time so that you dont have to search for specific roms you want and then install them in the wii's memory etc :)

It's not as simple as putting roms on a dvd. You need a program that can actually emulate those roms, and I don't think gamecube launcher (w/e that is) can do it.

I strongly recommend Snes9x GX if all you want is snes. You just put the file on your SD card in the apps folder, then plug it in and run it. IF you do that, THEN you can simply put SNES roms on a DVD and open them w/ Snes9x GX.

If you also want nes, there is a program called FCE Ultra that does the same thing. Genesis emulators also exist, among many many others. Check them out at wiibrew.org.

Also, if you have a large enough SD card, you can put your roms right on the SD card. Then you don't even have to put in a DVD, you can just turn on your wii and start playing.

Finally, if you want to download the premade GC Isos, well I can't link to it directly it's against the rules, but I think I can tell you how to find it? If not a mod can edit it.

Go to google, type in "GC/Wii emulator ISO" and click the first result. It gives rapidshare links to what you are looking for. If you can use newsgroups, go to newzbin.com and search for "wii emu". Download the first nzb that comes up. If you want to use torrent, search google for "Wii Multi-Boot Rom Pack ISO" and you will get tonnes of hits w/ premade emulators.
