i softmoded my wii folling this guide, http://yafaze.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=113
and i was wondering if i can update my wii to 4.0? as i have 3.3 firmware

also i just got into soft mods for the wii and this process was so simple that i kind of don't know what i did. so i am looking for another guide with do's and don't do's with a soft mod console
can i play online with back ups?
how to install hombrew (snes, nes, etc)?
how to play rock band 2 and use the guitar?
what will definitely brick the wii?

Yes you can. You will loose homebrew, but then you can get it back using the sticky guide posted here.
