Hi all, I dislike asking for help on my first post but I do plan to stick around so I'd appreciate any help in troublshooting the problems I'm having running a 360 backup at the moment.

Basically I'm having problems running backups at all on my 1.6 iXtreme flashed 360. Take the recent UFC for example, I'll run the game from the dashboard, the system will recognize it as being a game, and the screen will turn black. Following this the drive usually powers upto around 50% of the drive speed(ish), then will power back down. Sometimes it manages to power up to 100% for some seconds, I see the white copyright screen and following this the disc spins down completely and I'm given the unrecognized/dirty disc error. I've tried several other games on my PAL 360 including RacePro (pal) which I believe is wave 2, and Red Faction (rf). My drive is a BenQ, and it seems the flashing went without a hitch.

At a guess I can attribute the problems I'm having to either the discs I'm using (India 8X Verbatims), or my pretty damn old Sony DRU-700A, which I think was the first of Sonys DL writers. As a sign of it's age, there hasn't been a firmware update since 2004 :P. Could it be that my drive is just poor at writing to these discs and as a result causing problems for my 360 reading them? I've tried several legit games which work on the flashed drive.

I used Clone-CD for one of my first burns, selecting the .dvd file & burning at 2-2.4x, having tested the iso with abgx first. Second I used imgburn and set the layerbreak manually, set the drivespeed to 2.4x and the booktype to DVD-ROM.

Tried to give all the info possible so excuse the wall of text ;P, btw if I do need a need a new drive can anyone recommend one which is known first hand to be compatible with the 8x verbs? Thanks!

Grab and iso and run it through ABGX360, open imgburn and click on the .dvd file created and burn at 2.4 and post results. Are you sure the drive has 1.6?

Hi gameover9, finally got round to trying to work this out today, so I did what you said and burnt a backup of a PAL wave 2 game which I know has burnt/played successfully for others. Also I'm certain that I'm running the iXtreme 1.6 firmware. Here goes ;D:

It's probably this. Here's the media codes that firmware VY08 supports on that drive: -

MKM /001/00 [ 2.4x ]
PHILIPS /CD2/00 [ 2.4x ]
RICOHJPN/D00/01 [ 2.4x ]
RITEK /D01/01 [ 2.4x ]

MKM 003 (the 8X rated discs) aren't listed, so it could just be down to bad burns because of unsupported media.

What you could do is try verifying the burns in ImgBurn (that doesn't necessarily mean that your 360's DVD drive will read them fine though), but even better than that would be to do a proper disc quality scan with a program like Nero CD-DVD Speed/Nero DiscSpeed/Opti Drive Control, because then it will become instantly apparent whether poor burn quality is the problem.

If you don't have Nero CD-DVD Speed/DiscSpeed as part of a Nero bundle, download the trial of Opti Drive Control here: -

http://www.cdspeed2000.com/download.html

Put one of the burned games into the drive, fire up Opti Drive Control and hit the Disc quality button, set the read speed to 5X and check the Jitter box if available, then hit Start. It'll take half an hour or so, but once it's done, take a screenshot of the graphs it produces and then post a link to it on here.

Hi funksoul, thanks for ya time man. So I ran Opti Drive Control as you said, and used the backup I made today which accompanied the imgburn/abgx logs I posted earlier. Heres the results:

I'm sure you can make more sense of this than me, one thing I noticed is that it stopped analyzing at the layerbreak, and I had to read at 4x as there was no 5x option, I can post results at 6x if needed.

Well if that graph had continued like that all the way to the end, you'd have had a good burn there, because the PIEs are well within the limits and the PIFs are nice and low with a max of just 3.

The fact that it hasn't scanned past the layerbreak does still suggest that it could be a compatibility issue between the drive and media though.

If it was me, I'd just bite the bullet and get a new drive as here in the UK at least, a decent writer can be bought for less than a 25 pack of Verbatims. You may want to try the ImgBurn support forums just in case there's another issue we've missed (maybe a DMA/PIPO or driver filter issue), but that drive is quite old now and the firmware hasn't been updated in years. I was hoping that the Opti graphs would be conclusive, but they're not, so sorry I can't give you any better advice than that.

Well thanks for the input anyway, I'm planning on ordering a new graphics card this week so yeah now would be a good time to pickup a writer ;P. Any thoughts on the Pioneer DVR-216DBK? I heard they're quite reliable for backups and I'm not too fussed about lightscribe. Cheers!

Yeah, that's a good drive. I think it's a SATA drive and your old one is IDE, so make sure it's compatible, but lots of people use that Pioneer model for 360 backups. There's a good review of the 116 (the IDE equivalent I think) here: -

I just got a Sony DVD RW DRU-840A Dual Layer Drive and this thing Honestly I was thinking would bite but is much better than my Sammy Dual Layer drive.

I only paid 7 bucks at Office Depot for it too maybe someone else can get lucky like I did.

MKM-003 Verbatims can be from India or Singapore. The dye is the same, but the Indian ones are made by Moser Baer who apparently do not have the best reputation for quality compared to the Singapore manufacturers. I've only ever come across the ones made in Singapore personally.

Finally, all is resolved ;D! the Pioneer DVR-216DBK arrived today, along with a new 4890 I should have some fun with later lol, so I burnt off Skate 2 again with the india verbs & 1.9 f/w, everything went without a hitch & I'm running Skate 2 perfectly now. I'd put it down to the DRU-700A being incompatible with the 8x verbatims, maybe the 2.4x verbs would have done the trick but theres only those and the Aones on sale around here. thanks all for the help, particularly funksoulb cheers bro.

Btw, has anyone tried using the Aones for backups? Any good?

Glad you got it sorted mate!

Those Aone discs use Ricoh dye I think, which is not particularly well rated. In fact, on CDFreaks there are people that say the media code is faked on Aone discs and it's even worse dye than the RICOHJPND01 it's claiming to be. Some people use them without any issues though, so it's up to you. I'd just stick with the Verbatims if I were you, because they give excellent burn quality (with the right drive :D) and they have great longevity.
