I have a hitachi version 46 drive in my xbox 360. I flashed the drive a very long time ago and have had no problems until the latest wave of games were released (i.e. UFC undisputed).
So I tried to upgrade my firmware with 1.51 (since from what I have found, there is no 1.6 available for the hitachi drives). I went with the firmware toolbox 4.8 method of flashing.
However, I only got to the part where my console was flashed back to original state and then at some point after that, I suppose it timed out and the console shutdown. I turned the console back on and tried to put it back into mode b to continue flashing to firmware 1.51, it would not go into mode b. Everything else works and I can play original copies, but backups are not recognized and I can't get into mode b. I keep trying the method of opening the drive and unplugging the console, but it does not go to mode b. Please help if there is another way and how to finish the flashing of my hitachi v46.

If you are using the Slax method or the 2 wire trick, there is an easier method. Jungle Flasher will help you get your Hitachi flashed. You will need to properly setup Jungle Flasher by installing PortIO. Visit http://www.jungleflasher.net or the tutorial linked in my signature. Once you get JF setup and detecting your drive, eject the tray, and click send Mode B. It will shut and then Windows will recognize the drive.

I have installed jungle flasher, but I do not know what you mean by installing PortIO. Without knowing how to "install PortIO", I run jungle flasher and open the tray and try to click send to mode b, but it just keeps going and eventually does not respond. How do I get PortIO installed to detect my drive?

PortIO is included with Jungle Flasher. There is a Auto Install where you just double click the .EXE and it will install. If it will not auto install, you will have to install it manually. To install manually, click start, and in the search box type hdwwiz and hit enter. Click next, check the circle that says (advanced). Click next again, and click Have Disk. Navigate to the folder named manual install within the JF folder and click the .INI that says portio32.

Ok. I got PortIO installed and my xbox is in mode b. Now I scrolled down on jungleflasher.pdf to "flashing ixtreme to a stock hitachi drive". I clicked flash hacked f/w after checking all settings for my hitachi v46. It asks me to save the file, so I do, and it says "drive key not found, f/w may be corrupt". what am I missing?

Try a different transfer method under the Hitachi tab.

Tried RAM upload and mode select. Neither worked. Should I be doing something with the firmware folder or place firmware here file or the other tabs on jungleflasher? nowhere have I selected 1.51 firmware or anything like that. did I miss a step?

I noticed something else. When I tried putting my xbox into mode b, it said scanning for changes, and then it came up with an error. Also, under drivers pull down on the right, I do not seem to have my xbox driver as an option. I thought I was in mode b because it takes 2 ejects to open or close my xbox tray. maybe my xbox is not detected?

Not sure. There are two SATA ports on my motherboard and one is used for the hard drive on the computer so I used the other one for the xbox.
I think it definitely has something to do with the mode b error. It tries to go to mode b and says scanning for hardware changes. Then it says scan has returned an error. The only thing I don't understand is why it takes two clicks to open or close my drive (mode b) but wont display my driver under the driver pull down menu.

I got it. Not sure why it decides to show my drive in the list now, but I just kept trying it and it seems to work. So far, UFC works like a charm and everything seems good right now. thanks for your help.

Did you download the FW .bin? JF doesn't come with it... You have to put the right FW for your drive in JF's "firmware" folder.
You can DL the latest FW for all 360 drives here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5FIOGDM2 they're all in one .rar file.
I'm sure you already know, but make sure you restore you drive's original FW, or you'll brick it!
