I have just purchased an XBox 360 from Dell, which I expect to arrive with a Lite-on drive.

I've been reading through forums posts here to determine the best way to mod my system. Different tutorials describe different methods, and I'm not sure which is most appropriate.

1) Primary goal: play XBox 360 backups off HD or off network.
2) Alternate primary goal: play burned XBox 360 backups.
3) Secondary (optional) goal: create XBox 360 backups.

If I own an orignal game disc, I have no problem using a backup created by someone else, instead of creating my own. This is why I consider #3 entirely optional.

There are a lot of tutorials available both here and around the net, such as here and here. Should I need to flash the DVD drive, I see helpful threads like this.

There are too many tutorials, threads, and even videos. I can't figure out which one(s) are the most up-to-date and definitive.

Could someone please provide links to the best descriptions of how to accomplish each of these goals?

Ok....

1) You can't play 360 backups off the network or HD, you need to back them up on DL DVD's.
2)Yes your 360 will most likely be a LiteOn, so you will need a key extractor so that you can grab the key off the DVD Drive, in order to flash it. Look for the Xtractor USB tool. That will probably be your best option, cause it's cheap. Unless you want to build the tool yourself, there is a guide on here for that!

It looked like this was the case, but I'm very surprised that this is the current state of affairs!

I saw the DIY guide. I'm definitely going to buy one of the premade kits. :-) Some of the guides mention replacing the Lite-on with a Samsung MS28 drive. Under what circumstances can I flash and use my Lite-on drive, and when would I need to replace it with a Samsung instead?

There is no need to replace it with a Samsung drive. Once you extract the key from a lite-on the rest is pretty simple. The lite-on drive is a better drive by far imo.

Ya just stick with the LiteOn. Because swapping it won't do any good anyways, just cost you more money for a different drive. I have a LiteOn, and it's quiet then the other drives, and works quite well. Just get the USB Xtractor, and you should be good.
