hey im new here seems this place is one of the best to get solutions to problem other than call sony (we all don't got the money to have them repair it every 3 months. any ideas for me to try are welcome
ok at first i had a lens problem/no warranty. so i decided to give it a shot at fixing it and i cleaned the lens and was successful then couple months later same happened.
this time when i clean the lens i accidentally damaged the ribbon cable which attaches to the motherboard. so ordered a new PS3 LASER LENS RIBBON FLEX CABLE 60 PIN. and when it arrived i put it into the ps3 as it is suppose to be now the disks will not spin.
here is me looking for a problem with the spinning thing. when i read that the lens needs to emit light and reflect it back to start spinning.
now here my problem if the lens worked perfect before i replaced the ps3 ribbon cable. how can it not be working now
do i need a certain ribbon cable to suit the motherboard model (i don't know how to locate the motherboard model number)
i was also thinking do the ribbon cables have to be inserted so far and not all the way. i really don't know why it is doing this
also how can i tell if the lens has blown/fried how ever you want to put it.
any post welcome thx (just don't say call sony lolol)
Often times, when something like this happens, it's best to buy a new laser assembly. It's more expensive, but it's your best bet to fix the problem, and they'll often come with a new ribbon cable as well.
As far as a fix goes, sometimes the ribbon cables don't make good contact into their ports, so you might try taking it out again, cleaning the connections breifly be dusting them off with a microfiber clothe, and re-inserting the cable firmly (but carefully) into it's ports.
If that doesn't work, you might consider replacing the entire bluray laser assembly.
As far as testing whether or not your laser is blown goes... Well, aside from putting it in the hands of someone more experienced than yourself and letting them make the call - I've got no idea. Odds are if you poke around Craigslist you can find someone in your area who offers PS3 Mods / Repair -- they'll probably make for a good second opinion, but might cost you a little money.
They also might try and scam you into abandoning your PS3 with them by telling you that there's no way to fix it, but they can see about recoving your saves, blah blah blah "Just give me your 'dead' PS3 and be gone!" -- Don't buy into that.
Well to play it safe, I'd go ahead and assume that the burn mark indicates a bad laser, but it could just as easily be bad sodering, so who really knows.
When replacing parts, both for PCs and consoles, I always like to go ahead and replace assemblies and removable units as opposed to mucking about with individual components.
I mean, sure, if I can save a PC motherboard by replacing some capacitors, I'll do that, but if I have to replace and reset a laser head in a DVD drive, I'll just go ahead and replace the DVD drive.
See where I'm comming from with this?
I'll see if there's not someone a little more experienced who I can find and send to this thread.
