I never got in touch with the Wii hacking scene, but now I want a Wii, just wondering if I get one right now, will it be hackable to play backups? I heard earlier on you need a modship but now there's a softmod with the Zelda Twilight game, as far as I know the latest firmware for Wii is 4.00, if I got that firmware would it be hackable? Thanks

I tried to google myself but it's really frustrating, straightforward answer would be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

well im new to the scene too but ill tell you what i know and if a veteran goes over my head follow what they say.

from what i have read you will be ok on firmware 4.0(thats what i have) granted you use the right hack. Bannerbomb is the way i went and i love it! Twilight Hack is old news.

You dont need a modchip to play backups with this software mod.

something you need to look into when you get your wii is the serial code on the bottom. if it starts with LU65 or higher a soft mod wont work at this point in time. so if you get a wii maybe it would be a good idea to get one thats not new(save some moolah too). try craigslist.

i think that covers what you asked. im sure theres better answers out there but this covers what you asked in the simplest form possible.

Thanks for your answer, it was really helpful.
So if I buy a DS nowadays what chances would I get lower than LU65? Are the Wii being sold nowadays mostly LU65 or higher?

You mean Wii right, well all the NEW Wii sold in store are with serial LU64 and above. So as Celica00 mentioned buy a used one at craiglist , ebay or refurbished( gamestop)

I've seen some reactions of people who have done it but as you still have to buy one, you can decide to buy an "older" one.
Maybe you know someone at the store or you can ask them to check the serial number (I read that the Wii friends code is based on this number so that might be an excuse to check the serials ;)).

If I go to a store and check it, would it be on the box or the console itself?

Are you saying that the serial number of the Wii is on the outside box, as in you can see a Wii's serial number without opening the box?
It's been quite some time since I've looked at a Wii box.

Also I'd like to add that while the majority of LU64 and LU65 Wii do have problems with hacking it isn't as clear cut as LU64 Wii? Unhackable. There are LU64 and LU65 Wiis that don't have any problems with being softmodded. Also it isn't just LU64 Wiis that are out there. There are people saying that they bought a Wii very recently and it was LU30 something and yet they still experience trouble doing one thing or another.

Finally the issue with LU64 and LU65 Wii is not that you can't install the homebrew channel, the problem comes when you try to install cIOS which is what lets you play backups. People who try to install cIOS get a black screen and they can't do anything else.
There is a LU64 fix (I've heard that this is actually cIOS Rev11 as you may have noticed that cIOS went from 10 to 12)
Can't guarantee how much luck you will have with it but it has worked for some people.
Also note that one of the things in the changelog of cIOS Rev 12 is "Support for consoles with serial number LU64+"

I still need to read about some stuff. I don't have a LU64 Wii so I can't try it myself but I am very curious about what the method is for installing. Can one just install a wad of Rev12+ and everything will be ok?
I've also heard about another method using cboot2 by Wiigator. Still need to look into that.

Just kind of thinking out loud here...

There really is not much info out there on how to hack a LU64 or 65 system because the method out there is not official. SoftMii 3.0 is supposed to have official LU64/65 support.

Some users had issues and bricks when using the LU64fix so the SoftMii team pulled it until more info could be gathered.

So if you use the LU64 hack then your taking a risk. Some took the risk and had no issues. Others took the risk and have a door stop now.

Can someone post a picture of the wii box containing the serial code, so when I go to the store I can take the glance right where I know it's located?
And how likely am I going to encounter wii lower than lu64?
