article published on 19 June, 2009

Microsoft has confirmed that they are now shipping a Jasper-based Xbox 360 Arcade units with 512MB of on-board flash memory, a double from the current 256MB. "The Xbox 360 system software uses some of the included 512MB memory; less storage will be available to users. I donno, I think the Arcade bundle is stupid. Yea the 360 is $200 but it pretty much requires a HDD. Buying an Arcade bundle and then a HDD later on ends up costing more money then just going with the Premium in the first place...

How cheap is microsoft? 4GB of flash is under $10 through retail channels, probably less than half of that to a company like microsoft...yet they only provide 512MB?

My thoughts exactly. All their storage units for the 360 are too small and overpriced.

MS sells 20GB HDD for like $30. $230 < $300.
60 GB HDD w/Headset and 3 Months of live for $90 $290 < $300
You can buy that used for $80... $280 < $300
You can buy a 120 GB HDD brand new from Amazon $120. Total price is $320.. so for $20 more you can double the hard drive size.
You can buy a new 120GB HDD from a reseller on Amazon for $80-$90 $290 < $300.
You can buy a 120 GB HDD used on Amazon for under $80. $280 < $300.

I don't know what math you used to come out with the figure that buying an Arcade and a HDD seperately is more expensive than buying a premium. The Arcade is the ultimate system. If you aren't afraid of the internet, you can save some major money. You can basically make an Elite for the price of a Premium.

Changing the Flash Ram Amount makes no sense...Unless there will be a little something extra for the New Xbox OS to chew on but older units would lack this ability.

Whatever it is, its not needed to operate as a whole.

the flash ram for older boxes is not accessible nor would it be in this case. unless they use 256MB for the OS, and 256MB for game saves how ever this would introduce some issues for instance you could Flash this space then dump it to a file ex.(PSP>A)this could be reloaded back into flash to hack the console. it could also brick the console if the data in these area becomes corrupted, and trigger the automated ban system.

The real question is, can these arcade consoles on sale this week be modded?

I wanna buy one but only if it can be modded cause many of my friend's end up swapping their chewed up games (by their 360s) with rental copies every few months, and I ain't haven' that lol

I agree! I bought my arcade for $216 (tax in California sucks) and bought an elite hdd and memory card combo for $80 online.

i got the xbox 360 arcade, the new one (JASPER) like a month ago, and a friend of mine upgraded his xbox pro to a elite HD so he sold me his original 20 gb HD for like 25$, beat that.....

also the new xbox arcade runs nxe, which is comparatively faster then the the other versions, i have tested the loading of the games my self, and in pro, u cant run all games without a HD, in arcade u can, so i really think arcade is a better buy..........

"Beat that...". Okay :)

Now buy a 120 gb WD Scorpio (type BEVS) HDD... Hack it and then install it into that caddy you got off you mate.

You can fit about 12+ games on it now.

PS: If you can't get hold of a 120gb Scorpio (we can't seem to buy them anymore)- that's ok just use a 160gb. But the X360 will only see 120gb. When MS bring out a 160gb HDD you could always rehack it with the new signature. You may not have to use the BEVS models (it's part of the model number) BUT you will have to double-check that to make sure.

Regards.

You can try that Sony 120gig but the hack is only for the Scorpio drives as far as I know alirocks. And possibly only for the BEVS ones too. Also, it took a perusal of about three or four sites that eventually completely revealed to me how to go about it, as I had to hex-edit the app (but that's not hard) so it would find the drive.

Perhaps if I find time I will post a step by step article here detailing the best way to go about it basically compiling all the bits of info I found into one place.

Cheers, good gaming.
