I hope you mean black screen when you try to start the game and not black screen when you turn your Wii on.
Also you should update to cIOS38 Rev13.

So as soon as you turn it on there is a black and you can't do anything after that?
Did you try unplugging it for a while and then turning it on?

I have a black screen when I switch my Wii on so im assuming its bricked. I was stupid enough to install IOS60 after preloader - I didnt read a guide fully enough. I had managed to get into preloader and reinstall sys menu 4.0 which worked and i was able to restore the Wii, however after i switched my Wii off and switched it back on, all i get now is a black screen and I can hear the disc drive. For some reason I now cant get back into preloader by holding reset so it seems that im totally snookered.
I dont really know what I should do from here. The Wii is only a few months old and well within "warranty" but i have read that nintendo now class it as out of warranty if they can trace any signs of modding. I got a hold of a gamecube controller and modded it to try and access the rescue menu but I cant seem to get this to work - Does the region and sysmenu version number show up in the bottom right corner of the screen for version 4.0 if the rescue menu is accessed?
I downloaded the universal unbricker v2 ISO but dont have any modchip installed so im guessing this wont run due to being on a backup disc. One post i saw said that it would autoboot without a modchip but im not sure whether there is any truth in this. Even if i were to get a modchip, I know that would need configured to autoboot and most chips I looked at have a config menu once the wii is started - but im pretty new to this so dont know if there are any that can be set by jumper etc?
I bought the Wii for my family as well as me and they havent noticed its not working yet, im actually losing sleep over this worring about it and cant afford to go out and buy a new one (before anyone says anything I do know its my own fault i have the brick!) Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do.Im tempted just to just send it off to nintendo and see what happens but cant afford a big bill for repair. Would they be able to tell homebrew etc was installed with the Wii being in its current state?
Any suggestions would really help.

Are you sure that is all that happened?
You were on 3.2, and then you put in a legitimate Sims racing. It said that it wanted to update. You updated, it restarted and then there was a black screen? And it was you doing this and not someone who told you that this is what happened?
Unfortunately it sounds like your system menu is MIA but it takes more than just a legit update from your region to kill the system menu.
So you took apart the GC controller and pressed all the D-pad buttons at the same time? And the GC controller is plugged into the 4th controller port? (One closest to the memory card slots)
This won't work if your system menu is in fact gone.
But if it does work and you still are on 3.2 then you will have to update with a disc that is a higher firmware than you have such as one with 3.3 such as Animal Crossing and Wii Music or 3.4 such as Mario Tennis or Punch Out
Otherwise you would need a modchip (your system menu would still need to be there though)

That is what happened. Put in the sims racing and it said needed to update in the game channel. Clicked the update, it did its thing and said it needed to restart, upon restart it did nothing but a blank screen. So you telling me that now I need to istall a modchip? Any suggestions on chips or where to get them? Thanks

Honestly man I believe Nintendo will charge you $75 for the service fee (modded or not) and restore it. You loose anything you had on it but still better than dropping the cash for a new one.

It will do the trick if your System Menu is still in tact and you see your system version in the lower right hand when you do savemii http://savemii.net/ or savemiifrri (the gamecube controller method)

Did you happen to have starfall installed? You should be able to hook a gamecube controller to port one and then turn the wii on and hit i believe the Y button, and it will tell you the version in the bottom right of the screen and then update to a new dash.
