HELP NEEDED ON BASICS OF F/W FLASHING!

Hi guys,
first off i would like to apologise in advance if the following questions have been answered, i have searched the forums but have had no luck in finding answers to my questions.
i would also like to apologise for the very dumb questions i am about to ask...! i just want to make sure i am flashing my box correctly as this is my first attempt.
ok so, i have 2 xbox 360's...
1) xbox premium hitachi drive (flashed to 1.4 ixtreme by a friend)
2) xbox 360 elite benq drive (bog standard xbox 360, not flashed as of yet)
The Plan
Basically the plan is to update the xbox premium to 1.51 ixtreme, and flash the xbox elite to 1.6 ixtreme.
I have the following equipment for the job:
1) USB flash drive
2) VIA 6421 PCI SATA CARD
My questions
1) how do i know if i have a motherboard which is compatible with the sata pci card? I had a read through the jungle flasher tut which shows a pic of a motherboard with sata connections on it, my mother board has 2 connections on it, is this ok?:
also all the tuts i have seen on youtube etc show the user connecting the sata cable from the xbox dvd drive to the pc motherboard, [dumb question alert] so what do i need the via sata pci card for?
2) Out of iprep and jungle flasher, which is the better software to use? So far i am leaning more towards jungle flasher as it seems to be more simple to follow.
3) Is it the same procedure to flash both elite and premium xbox's? and lastly Is it the same process to completely flash from scratch to a 1.6 as it is to just update from a 1.4 to 1.51?
Please dont kill me guys for making a thread with such basic questions, but i have been recommended this forum by another user so i am hoping for mature replies to my questions.

Hi there, sounds like you have the correct kit tho you don't need your USB flash drive. Basically you need to download a program call Jungle Flasher, its available on XBINS (Recommended) or Google. Once it loads, click on the Guide link and it will tell you what you need to do for each model of drive. Or use THIS link (Thanks Leerage :D)
Im not going to go in to too much depth as I would just be repeating what's on the Tutorial but i will give the following tips.
You will need to flash the Hitachi drive back to stock firmware before you upgrade to 1.51
And the Via SATA card is where you plug in your xbox DVD drive.

that sounds simple enough. so the Via SATA card is plugged straight into the xbox dvd drive via the sata cable? so the 2 sata connections i have on the motherboard are not used at all?
i appreciate the advice dude, i know it cant be easy answering questions which you have probably covered a bazillion times already!

This question has been answered somewhere in the area of 5 to 49245524455688246 times already. Maybe 49245524455688247, but since your post is so neatly articulated, here's some info:
1. Preferably, get yourself a "KeyGrabber PRO" or some other type of "Connectivity Kit".
2. The Hitachi or BenQ drive has to be connected through a Sata port. Since you already have a VIA 6421 Sata card, connect it and use the sata port on it. (DO NOT install it's drivers)
3. Download and install "PortIO drivers".
4. Download iXtreme 1.6 firmware (place it in JungleFlasher's firmware folder.
5. Read JungleFlasher's tutorial/instructions for your drive and follow step for step.
6. It's straight forward and easy from there.

That's correct. You don't use the ones on your motherboard.

No worries at all
BTW, a few peeps have reported issues with getting into 'mode B' with Jungle Flasher, It should be easily ovecome by using SLAX. Search on here if you hit this peoblem.

i appreciate the patience eebeejay. is the KeyGrabber PRO kit really necessary? can i not do without it?
so far i noticed the kit makes the 'half tray open' method easier? what are its other uses?

You don't really need one of these BTW, some peeps have them but you defo don't need them as I have done quite a few Hitachi's and a couple of Benq's without one.

ok this is where it gets slightly more confusing... should i not just use slax instead of jungle flasher all together then? or are they both just different softwares for different uses?

Na, dont even bother to look in to slax unless you have probs getting in to mode B with jungle flasher.
FYI. Slax is a Linux based bootable ISO that gets your Hitachi in to mode B. You would then need to flash the drive which you can do with Jungle Flasher

oh thats ok then! :D
i think i will start off by flashing my xbox elite first straight to 1.6, and then tackle the xbox premium.
if i have any problems expect to see me back in this thread guys!

A connectivity kit simply makes the physical connection easier.
I suggested a connectivity kit because you will more than likely be re-flashing again & again (iXtreme 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, friend's 360s, etc) an a kit makes it a helluva lot easier. But it's not neccessary.
I simply mentioned the KeyGrabber PRO because it's the one I bought. If you get one, it is the best value out there. It has a power switch, an eject switch, Mode-B switch, connectors for power, RS232, sata, USB, and includes probe for LiteOn drives). Also comes with software.

hi guys,
i am about to go ahead with flashing my xbox elite, but before i do it seems a few more quesions have been raised!
i have looked through the jungle flasher pdf tut, and it seems there a few different methods to unlock the benq, how do i know which method is ued to flash the xbox elite straight to 1.6 from stock?
and do i need to disconnect all cables from my dvd, hdd etc before i commence? and lastly do i install the drivers to the via sata card i bought?
i knw the questions i have asked are some what already mentioned in the jungle flasher tut. but i just want to be ABSOLUTELY sure i have everything covered before i commence....!
oh and another thing, what is the besy way to do the 'half open tray method'? should i go with the jugnle flasher recommendation of opening the tray and then disconnecting the drives power supply, and then just manually closing the tray half way? will the tray not close when i re-attach the power supply back to dvd druve?

just follow the tutorial, it wasn't written (and subsequently followed by thousands) if it wasn't any good.
The guide shows multiple ways to unlock, and it says what properties to do a certian unlock (such as certian firmware version I believe or so).
Depending on what chipset of your sata card, you don't have to install drivers (if using the via). But jungleflasher is made to work with almost all chipsets.
