Is it true if i properly dissasemble the 360, wash it sand it down then use primer then paint it with a plastic spray and put a finish on it, it may be more prone to overheating? i asked this on yahoo answers and a lady said that since the paint makes it something idk.... and another question i would like answered is if i use a plastic adhesive primer can i use any type of spray paint or still just plastic only spray?

i will guess and say that close to half the people on this site have or have had a painted console, it wont cause any extra overheating problem, if that was so all my xbox's would be down.
i dont use a primer, just sand and spray with krylon, the only dangerous thing about it is im high for about 20 min after.
sometimes it makes me want to spray some gold in a brown bag...just kidding!

I have lost all and any respect i had for this site!

*clicky*

that's a thread a little while back about painting your case. nothing about the overheating but from how many people do it... i can't see it having an effect on the heat.

a little difference in opinions in the thread but lots of good info with some pics from guys who have been doing this for a while and know what they're doing.

and after i sand and spray how long should i let it sit and will it look like the elite after i just spray it black with 2 coats? or 3? and should i use a clear coat after?

if i remember right... and i think it's in that thread... people who have painted their 360's black actually ended up with a darker shade of black than the elite. when side by side it almost makes the elite look dark greyish.

everything i've said is from what i've read (or thought i read) so take with a grain of salt.

I've used Plastikote Vinyl spray on a number of 360 controller cases and it works great... krylon is another good brand. Plastic paints don't require sanding, but spray paint does.Just use it outside with a mask, and be careful, vinyl spray softens the plastic for a short while.

Test it on the inside of the case first... plastic sprays cling to the surface, sanding may cause a rough surface... it may change with different paints.

I'm actually in Australia, but Plastikote/Krylon should be available in US, basically any automotive store has plastic paints.

autozone will have either plasti-color or dupli-color vinyl paint. it comes in some limited colors. I found krylon fusion(which is the plastic paint) at Wal-mart and has alot more colors.

Okay, i found the link

http://alcaron.blogspot.com/2006/12/noir...controller.html

It works really well... basically duplicolor, plasticolor, plastikote and krylon work well (i've heard plasticolor is the best if you can find it, i don't know if that is true or not though).

I really want to find a paint to colour my controller chrome... that would look so good.

Alright i know it may seem repetetive but i want to make sure its perfect, so should i sand it? if not why do some people say it do it? also when i choose black should i use grey as a first coat or just 3 thin coats of black? and if 3 will it be completely covered or can i use more? and how long should i let it sit? please be exact..

I want it to look exactly like this,

Don't do an undercoat... use the same paint for the whole process. You want to be able to completely finish the case with the minimal amount of paint used.

Here's the process I (and many others) used.

Quote:
Now take all the pieces and rinse them in warm water, use soap if you want but only a little, you don't want any of it to remain once you are done rinsing.

Dry the parts thoroughly with a paper towel or let them air dry for awhile.

Once dried simply take the individual part and, in a well ventilated area/outdoors (the fumes from this stuff are even worse than spray paint IMHO) hold the part at arms length, with the spray can close to your body (about 1.5 ft. between nozzle and part) and start lightly making passes over the surface.

!!!WARNING!!!

Make quick passes, do NOT try to get it solid black in one coat. Unlike spray paint this stuff actually causes a chemical reaction with the plastic, causing the color to be absorbed into the plastic itself (which is why I chose this over regular paint which fades and rubs off fairly easily).

This means two things.

If you overspray it will be nearly impossible to correct your mistake properly, as there is no layer of paint to sand down, you will be sanding almost directly onto the original surface.
The parts will be vulnerable to damage until they cure. You can literally take your fingernail and scoop soft plastic right off the surface just after you spray them. So BE CAREFUL!
That being said, make a LIGHT pass, hold the piece for about 30 seconds, set it down, do the next piece, hold it for 30 seconds, set it down, rinse/repeat until all the parts have been VERY lightly coated. You should still see plenty of white, this is fine.

Now, start with the first piece again, give it another very light coat. Very light, keep the nozzle about a foot and a half away from the part.

If you smell heavy fumes please, STOP, this stuff will make you very sick, worse than spray paint. Get a ventilator or move to a better ventilated area if need be, don't mess with this stuff.

Once you go through a second coat on all the parts...go for another one. After the third coat you should be down to touch-ups. Make sure you spray along the seams, there are gaps between the parts and if you don't get the seams properly you will be able to see white when you look at it.

Once you have your third coat and touch-ups done, let it dry/cure for about 20 minutes, then find a well lit area and go over the parts, make sure you coated them properly, make sure no white shows through.

You can get it to look like this (imagine it on the console).

Yeah... my bad, what ever happened to glarch?

Here's a chrome controller shell from xcm, it comes with an led board that's easy to wire.

It's way better than painting because it's a treated surface. I don't think you can get the same results with paint, most metallic paints need a metallic surface to reflect light from.

Glarch got banned for having a referral link in his sig... bit harsh.

That console looks awesome... I'm thinking of either buying a chrome case like that one, or one of those chameleon cases. BTW With the controller, are the triggers chrome... or are they blue?

they're made of blue plastic, you can choose from blue, red, green and yellow.

both xcm and talismoon make controller shells in chrome but only the xcm ones light up.

what paint did you use? Did you shake the can before you used it? It looks like the paint was seperated and came out all pigmented. If you take some 2000 grit sandpaper and then do another coat it should help it out a lot.

If you end up using clear coat on it then it will turn out shiny. It all depends on what you want.
