Hi i was just wondering if it is possible to flash my Hitachi 79FL drive with a laptop. I dont own a desktop nor do i have the luxury to use someone else's. However, i do have a USB to SATA adapter. And also if it is possible, whats the best firmware available for this particular drive. Really appreciate any response. Thanks in advance

yes it is possible to flash it with a laptop and a usb to sata adapter, but there is no guarantee it will work. The best thing to do is try it and see if it works. If it doesn't i think a few people have had luck using a sata laptop card. As far as firmware goes the latest version out for Hitachi drives is ixtreme 1.51, but 1.6 is supposed to be comming out soon.

If you get a compatible USB to SATA adapter, I would recommend using Jungle Flasher to flash the drive. You will also need to burn a 79 unlock CD to unlock the drive.

yes well i tried using iPrep and it cant locate any drive. I've spent 6 long hours behind research and flashing it and still no luck. I'm using a HP Pavillion dv 6000 and for some reason after i connect my hitachi drive to the sata cable and hook it up with my laptop, the xbox itself keeps heating up and turns off automatically after about 5 or 10 minutes. This happens when the xbox is taken apart, when i press the power button..it just turns on without any lights appearing on the ring of lights. But when i put the xbox back together, this problem seems to disappear and it works just fine. Right now i am just having trouble getting the drive into mode b and as far as the laptop detecting the drive.. still no luck. Thank you guys for your insights.

Did you install the PortIO driver for Jungle Flasher?

yes the port IO is installed and running. So, i tried using jungleflasher and it didnt detect any drives normally, then i went onto install jungleUSB since i was using a sata to usb adapter..and after installing it, jungleflasher scans and still cant find any hitachi drives. Amongst all of this i found out that my normal cd drive in my laptop went missing..doesnt show up on my computer.. Any help and insights always appreciated..

A little update.. So after spending a few more tiresome hours behind it, i have somehow managed to make my drive to show up on windows. Before, i had the usb plugged into my laptop, the sata pluuged into the drive and then when i turned my xbox on nothing showed up. After reading some articles, i pressed the eject button on my xbox first, then i pressed the power button and turned the console off and turned it back on again and then i plugged in the usb to the laptop. The drive showed up and this was the result http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2943/flash.png . However, i didnt know the drive was in mode b or not because i didnt use slax to boot up nor did i use jungleflasher to put it to mode b. But it was taking me two or three presses of the eject button to open the drive. So i thought that that drive is in mode b and then proceeded with the unlock 79 cd. After playing the wav file once and pausing it the other time, i went and typed in the unlock79 command and this seemed to appear http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3199/cmds.png , after which either my xbox froze or my laptop froze. As it is, i am stuck yet again..this flashing seems to be a step by step problem. Any help would always be appreciated. Thanx

If you can get it the way you had it again, do the pausing and playing with the audio wav, then run the 79 unlock command. If you get that error that you original got, type it again 1 more time and it should say "done!".

If you cant get the 79unlock command to work, try this, goto the 79unlock folder you have downloaded, open it and copy the 79unlock command file to an empty spot in your c drive, then get your xbox drive back into mode b play the unlock cd once, play again and pause it, eject using xbox not pc, goto start on pc and then run, type cmd and type cd c:\ make sure you put a space between the cd and c and press enter you should get c:\>, now type 79unlock d where d is your drive letter and press enter, it should say done, now you can go ahead and dump and flash!!

Are you turning the drive off before you open ToolBox? If you turn the drive off any it will kick it out of ModeB and the drive will be locked again. Also, when you insert the game are you ejecting the drive with your 360 or with ToolBox? I had problems with a Hitachi 78 once when getting to that step, I was ejecting with the 360... Tried ejecting with ToolBox and worked like a charm. If all else fails with ToolBox you can always go back to JungleFlasher. With JungleFlasher it is easy as highlighting Flash iXtreme and clicking Flash.

I have tried in 3 different laptops now.. still no luck.
2 of the laptops are running on XP, and it detects the hitachi as soon as i connect my usb. The only way i can get the drive to mode b is by using the usmodeb in jungleflasher. Unlocking with the audio seems to work fine as well. Just cant dump any files on either maximus toolbox or jungleflasher.
