Hi,
Here are the specs for the current Wii I am using:
Wii 3.2U (US)
Wiikey w/firmware 1.9s
No Homebrew Channel or any softmod features
All the previous backup games have been working perfectly. I want to update the Wii's firmware to 4.0U but I am unsure if I should. I am not sure if I should install like the Homebrew Channel or have all the WAD manager things etc. I am not familiar with any of those (as in softmodding) at all.
Recently, I tried to play Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and I brickblocked it and it loads up on the Disc Channel but when clicked on Start, a black screen shows and the Wiimote turns off. Hopefully this is caused because my Wii's firmware is not at 4.0U.
Please let me know of your suggestions/advice on whether or not I should update to 4.0U and if this would fix the problems I am having with the new games. Also, please let me know if this will affect being able to play previous backups, like Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy, SSBB, etc. I want to update in order to prepare for future games, like Wii Sports Resort, The Conduit, etc.
Thank you for your time and I hope you guys are able to help me.

Thanks for the response. Have you tried to play any backups, new and old, since you have updated to 4.0U? I'm a little hesitant because I want to be sure there are no problems. So far, 3.2U has been the best.

I soft modded my wii and added the usb loader and backup loader
and tried out the conduilt
your still not safe from updates on new games
so you should update then atleast install backup loader.

I've read that ppl were having problems playing burned games after updating to 4.0. I have a Wiikey as well, and I'm waiting for some more info before I update....Most of my games are burned now so it'd be pointless if I couldn't play them lol.
Relinquish your pain, unto me.

I updated to 4.0 recently. PAL, Wiikey, -burnt games still work great, ive tried Grand Slam Tennis, and The Conduit (ntsc ver. with latest geko OS).
Only problem is not wiikey related. I installed the CIOS before i updated, but for some reason i cant install .wads now. Homebrew channel still works great, but cant install the wad to use the ISO loader, keep getting ret errors.

I have a Wiikey with 1.9s. My Wii is at 4.0u.
Other than that, my Wii is "stock".
I don't brickblock my disks because I don't run out of region software.
I have NO problems with any games, including the new releases.
My 7 yr. old is 80% done with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and we have encountered no issues.

I havent played my wii for a looong time. I also have a wiikey chip running 1.9s I believe (sounds familiar.
Anyway, what is the best way to update to 4.0u? Via an actual game, correct (the original game disc)?
I believe I read a long time ago that we should NOT update via internet. Just double checking.
Thanks Y'all!

Wii spec:
Wii 3.2U (US)
Wiikey w/firmware 1.9s
No Homebrew Channel or any softmod features (and no intention to install-very confusing)
I tried to play Boom Blox Bash Party (no brickblock). A black screen shows after I clicked on the Start bottom on a Boom Blox background. The wii is fine after I restart the wii by switching on & off of the main power.
Is it safe to update to wii's firmware to 4.0U without installing Homebrew Channel?
To cp1666: your link is not working. Could you please re-paste the link again.
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can update to 4.0 firmware using the system update. This should not effect the Modchip.
However if you want to install BootMii to back up your system NAND or play Trucha Signed disc then I would recommend installing a cIOS before updating to 4.0 firmware.

can I follow the same tutorial for softmodding a wii on a wii with a modchip that already has the homebrew channel installed? Minus the HBC installation part anyway??

Last time i updated my Wii was when Super Mario Galaxy was released.
I am on version 3.1u i think i have winkey installed (i bought it pre modded from the shop and he did not know which key was installed but i remember using 1.9b.recover and 1.9gBootUSA. My kids want me to download new games and just been reading the forums for last few days and found version 4.0u is out.
If i was to upgrade will my old games still work and is it safe to upgrade modded wii. Also anyway of telling which version of wiikey i am using as i also read 1.9s is also out.
Also been reading about homebrew channel so shall id do that first before upgrading to 4.0? and i am in India and i cannot buy zelda original game so any other way to hack?
Thank you in advance.

Well I personally did not see a reason to update. I even downloaded Punch Out, a pretty new game, and it played fine on my 3.2u softmodded Wii.
