I still have not tried it.

I think I've read somewhere that it is safe as long as you don't cheat. Is that true?

I wanted to just say "yup" like someone who answered this question for someone else but then you had to go and add the part about cheating online.

Anyway yeah it's safe if you don't cheat.
Nintendo was banning cheaters in Mario Kart Wii. Some people had some method of getting around it. Others had to call Nintendo. Nintendo told them that they don't appreciate them ruining the experience for others.

By cheaters, are you saying people who are altering game play or pirates?
