Attempting to return my Maxtor external to its previous state since my USB Loader GX experiment doesn't seem to be working out. I can't get it formatted with anything (XP, Win7, OSX), a range of errors from generic failure to permission denied.

Did I miss a warning about using external drives for this, or is my Maxtor possibly circling the drain?

Most recent attempt. "Windows could not complete the format."

Anyone? Don't mind being told I'm an idiot. Has anyone been able to return an external drive to normal Windows usage after WBFS?

Why don't you try deleting the partition and do it again. Also, Maxtor has some utils on their website. Try those.

Good point, don't think I've tried that yet--brain kinda went into panic mode.

I'll also check out Maxtor utils if not.

Thank you.

Removed partition, re-created, attempted format. "Windows was unable to complete the format."

Did you try to format using NTFS? Windows may have problem with big FAT32 partitions. If you want to format FAT32, search for a free utility named "fat32format.exe"
