I have firmware 4.01 M33 for fat PSP. I checked to see if there was an update. It said there was one. Is it safe to download the update from the psp itself using the update software option?

Also is that firmware I have the newest one?

i was told whenever i do an update via the psp I will get the custom firmware update nothing from the sony servers.

Yes that is correct the update file should be on your Memory Stick. I just did it yesterday and got 5.03 m33-6 update the file should reference that. Then you just run it from the memory stick if I recall correctly. You can read the release notes for that custom firmware if you want.

5.03 is official firmware so I wouldn't update to it unless you want official firmware.
