I'm very interested in putting linux on my ps3 to bring out its full potential. I ahve a question though, when a linux is installed can you easily switch to the xmb? But I also would like to know which linux ditsro/version is best compatible and most useful?

Going by you questions I would suggest Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 as it is the official version that Sony suggests as well as it has the most support.

As far as ease of switching OS'es (once it is installed) all you have to do is go to your ?Settings → System Settings → Default System? and choose ?Other OS" reboot the PS3 and you will be in Linux. To switch back to the XMB just type ?boot-game-os? at a ?kboot:? screen.

But all of that information is available when you install YDL 6.1 by the tutorial from Fixstars. As well as there is a thread here you could read up on and follow. Use the search function and search for terms like Install YDL 6.1 PS3 or Install Yellow Dog Linux PS3 as well as even your thread title as this question has been asked many times before.
